If you and your friend share the same taste in music, you can listen to it together. Yes, if you have AirPods, then you can avail this feature. This fun little feature of AirPods is called “Audio Sharing”.
I was shocked to discover that you can share music by connecting two AirPods to the same device. Sounds like a fun activity to do with friends. Since you are here, I’m sure you are curious about this feature as well. Here’s how you can do it on your iPhone or your iPad.
How Can You Connect 2 AirPods to 1 iPhone or iPad
- I start by connecting both pairs of AirPods to my iPhone or my iPad as usual. For this, I go to the Bluetooth settings and click on my AirPods.
- To connect the next pair of AirPods, I go to the Control Center.
- Tap and hold the Now Playing card on the top right corner.
- Then, I click on the AirPlay icon and select “Share Audio.”
- Now comes the fun part of connecting them. For this, I bring the second pair of AirPods close to the device. Please note that you must complete this step with the lid open, as the connection won’t be established otherwise.
- Soon, I see the second pair of AirPods appearing on the screen. I click on them and then tap on Share Audio.
How to Stop Sharing Audio?
- When my friend is done listening to music, I go to the Control Center again to disconnect their AirPods.
- Tap and hold the Now Playing card on the top right corner.
- I click on the AirPlay button. After doing this, tap the second AirPod that you want to disconnect, and it will stop the audio sharing.

I have already mentioned above the devices that are compatible with this feature; however, there are certain restrictions that you should be aware of.
Audio Is Controlled By One Person
One of the major restrictions is that the one controlling the iPhone or the iPad has the final authority over the soundtrack played. This means that my friend has to listen to similar music or podcasts. Unfortunately, you cannot listen to two different sources.
Not More Than 2 People Can Use This Feature
Another major drawback is that only two people can share this feature at a time. If you are planning to have a blast with a group of friends, then unfortunately, you would have to use a speaker. Currently, Apple only allows this feature to be shared between two devices.
Drains Battery
It is quite obvious that whenever you are using this feature, the battery will drain drastically. My iPhone or iPad battery runs out sooner than ever. If you have a power bank with you, then it’s okay, but if you’re planning to share audio for a long train ride, you might run out of music soon because the battery won’t last long.
Mic Works For Primary AirPods Only
So far, I am only focusing on music because that is the primary goal of sharing two AirPods with one device. Apart from this, the mic for the second AirPod won’t work. If your friend is receiving calls, then they need to disconnect from the iPhone completely. However, the mic for the first AirPods connected works perfectly fine.
Spatial Audio Does Not Work
Finally, the last disadvantage is that spatial audio does not work while using Audio Sharing. I love Apple’s spatial audio feature because it makes the sound and songs seem realistic. However, if you are getting to share your emotions with your friend through music, then hopefully this little disadvantage won’t affect you as much.
Why You Are Unable to Connect Two AirPods to One Ipad At The Same Time
If you are unable to connect two AirPods to one iPhone or iPad at the same time, this may be due to a low charge or compatibility issues. If two AirPods are of very different generations and the iPhone or the iPad does not support them, then this problem can arise.
Another common issue can be if you are trying to connect a third pair, since this feature is only available for two. On top of that, I always have the latest update on my phone for the best performance.
