CES 2026 felt different this time. As I walked across the halls, I saw AI wearables everywhere I looked. It felt like the industry collectively decided our faces to be the prime real estate for tech with the varied display of smart glasses.

When it felt like everything was about AI assistants, a pair of gaming glasses, ROG XREAL R1 caught my eye. I saw Project AURA turning heads with its AI-powered computing, Google AI Glasses trying to be the ultimate assistant and Solos AirGo V2 smart glasses making the noise with their modular tech that allows you to swap the battery if it gets damaged.
But ASUS ROG showed up with something that will actually change the gaming industry. They didn’t bring a AI assistant, instead, they brought glasses that are specifically designed for gaming.
The ROG XREAL R1 gaming glasses were the best gaming glasses at the show. Now, the big question here is: is this the future of portable gaming screens? Or just another flashy CES demo that looks great under the bright lights?
What are ROG XREAL R1 Gaming Glasses?
The ROG XREAL R1 gaming glasses are the result of a collaboration between ASUS ROG and XREAL.
These aren’t VR headsets like the Meta Quest. They are also not smart AI glasses that read your emails and messages, they are high-performance wearable display glasses. They use AR (Augmented Reality) tech to project a massive virtual screen right in front of your eyes.
Design and Display

One of the coolest things about the ROG XREAL R1 Gaming Glasses is that they actually look like glasses. Unlike a bulky VR headset, these weigh just 91 grams. Each eyeglass comes with a Full HD (1920×1080) Micro-OLED display.
Because these glasses have an OLED display, the blacks are perfectly deep and the colours pop in a way that your standard laptop screen just can’t match. It also comes with a virtual screen of 171 inches and has a solid 57° Field of View (FOV) that covers the majority of your focused vision.
It can also reach a brightness upto 700 nits, making it bright enough for most indoor environments.
Gaming Focused Features
You might ask, why do I need the ROG version? The answer is: Speed. Most AR glasses use a refresh rate of 120Hz. The ROG XREAL R1 gaming glasses are the world’s first glasses to hit a 240Hz refresh rate.
With a motion-to-photon latency of just 2ms to 3ms, these are built for fast-paced actions, while professional Esports players might still stick to their 500Hz desktop monitors.
To make connectivity easier, they include the ROG Control Dock, which features: two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 and a USB-C for direct connection to devices like the ROG Ally or ROG ALLY X.
Audio Experience
A giant screen is nothing without good sound. For this, ASUS has entered into a partnership with Bose to tune the built-in speakers.
The Bose technology delivers immersive spatial audio experiences to enhance the action.
It creates a 3D soundstage that helps you pinpoint where footsteps are coming from in a game, though you can still pair your favourite Bluetooth headphones if you want total privacy here.
Who are the ROG XREAL R1 Gaming Glasses Actually For

The ROG XREAL R1 gaming glasses are for:
- Individuals who travel a lot, as they are perfect for long flights or train rides, where you can enjoy your private cinema.
- For gaming enthusiasts, since they come with a 240Hz refresh rate, which is ideal for gaming.
Wrap Up
What I like about the ROG XREAL R1 gaming glasses is that they know exactly what they want to be. In a pool of gadgets that are trying to disrupt reality with AI, these glasses, in collaboration with XREAL, come with prescription inserts to give you a better experience.
I’d choose these ROG XREAL R1 gaming glasses if I were big on gaming. Because it takes something we already love, gaming and movies, to an experience that is 100 times bigger and more portable.
The ROG XREAL R1 gaming glasses are a glimpse into a future where you can carry your screen wherever you want it to be and I am excited for it.
