DOD announced its contract awards on October 2, and Oura received a $96M contract. The contract awarded is for DHA (Defence Health Agency) and not only for Oura rings.
Oura will be providing many training and services to multiple military medical treatment facilities in the US. While neither DHA or Oura has specified how many rings will be delivered the contract is meant for the entire DHA workforce under wellbeing program support services.
Oura’s Contributions to DHA Beyond Smart Rings
Although the DOD doesn’t say it, the day after they announced the contract, Oura launched the Gen 4 rings. It is obvious they will be delivering the all-new Gen 4 rings along with multiple services, one of which is Data Analysis, which comprises of-
- Monitoring physiological stress
- Recovery
- Resilience
- Wellbeing Indicators
- Individual Biometric Data
- Aggregate Wellbeing Visualization for the DHA
- Content Delivery of Wellness-related Insights & Training
In short, Oura will track vitals and analyse it on individual level, also collectively assess data for the whole agency and will provide useful insights. Besides, it will also provide DHA with informative content for wellness and training.
Oura will also provide “workforce wellbeing services” such as High-performance medicine, Mindfulness training, Leadership coaching, Protective factors, and peer-to-peer support training.
Here High-performance medicine refers to a different approach that focuses on optimizing function and preventive measures rather than curing the disease at hand. It is usually applied to highly active superhumans who deal with a high amount of physical and psychological stress on a daily basis.

DHA’s $96M investnemt contract isn’t the first time DOD has humongusly invested in Oura. Previously, Airforce has also gifted Oura rings to its graduates and last year Navy has also given Oura rings to 1000 sailors and marines to study fatigue.
What’s special about this contract that it is an Sole Source basis which loosely means that the contractor has no competitors in the market. The contract’s performance period is for a year till September 30 2025.
