A New AR Glasses

What makes the XREAL 1S immediately stand out is the automatic 2D-to-3D conversion. These glasses can convert ordinary flat content into an immersive 3D visual in real time using the company’s X1 spatial computing chip.

While there is a massive dip in refresh rate from 120Hz to 30Hz in the 3D mode, the image still remains stable, all thanks to the latency, which is kept as low as 3ms.

Takao Takayama, XREAL’s product manager, has also confirmed that the conversion feature will also roll out for the existing models- XREAL One and One Pro, via a software update around the 1S launch.

Display and Optics

The XREAL 1S comes with a modest but meaningful upgrade in the brightness and display area. It features a Sony-made 0.68” micro-OLED display, which delivers:

  • 1920×1200 resolution per eye
  • Up to 120Hz refresh rate for 2D
  • 700 nits peak brightness
  • 52-degree field of view
  • ΔE < 3 color accuracy and 108% sRGB coverage

The light transmittance can switch automatically between 0%, 35% and 100%, adjusting the transparency based on environmental conditions.

This makes the 1S particularly suited for movies, productivity screens and gaming.

Performance and Head Tracking

The 1S features the X1 spatial computing chip and handles frame generation, distortion correction across 4000+ nodes and spatial anchoring.

Because the 1S has 3DoF head tracking, the display screen remains locked in one place even while moving the head around. This keeps the experience stable and smooth, especially for watching movies or playing games.

Comfort, Fit and Audio

The XREAL 1S is lighter than the XREAL One, weighing just 82g. It also comes in a single colour- Silent Blue, and has flexible temples and adjustable hinges.

The glasses support Spatial Sound 4.0, a dynamic audio algorithm and features four array microphones with an uplink ENC noise-cancellation algorithm for clearer calling. XREAL has also partnered with Bose to tune an open-ear speaker design, because of which outside noise is still audible.

XREAL Neo: A Battery Pack

Companion accessory to the XREAL 1S glasses, the XREAL Neo is a 10,000 mAh mobile battery pack designed with AR users in mind.

It sports two USB-C ports; these can be used to charge the device while it’s showing a video, so the glasses don’t run out of battery in the middle of a game or movie.

It is also compatible with Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, which allows you to carry it as a portable charger if you’re travelling.

Price and Availability

For now, the XREAL 1S and Neo are only available in Japan, with a worldwide release expected to happen very soon.

The XREAL 1S is priced at 67,980 yen, which is about $435-$437. The XREAL Neo is priced at 14,580 yen and a bundle including both devices is available for 76,560 yen, which saves you about 6,000 yen over buying both separately.

Early buyers will also receive the XREAL Hub as a bonus on preorders.

Wrap Up

XREAL’s 1S is bringing in significant upgrades in audio, comfort, brightness and field of view, all this while debuting the first real-time 2D-to-3D video conversion.

Pairing the 1S with the Neo battery pack is a smart move to extend viewing time and productivity sessions, while also doubling as a battery pack for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

While we wait eagerly for the global launch, the 1S seems to be on the path to becoming one of the most accessible and feature-rich entry points into the AR experience.
