Amazfit vs Garmin Ecosystem: Which Is Catching Up Faster?

If you are shopping for a fitness watch, you are probably stuck deciding between two main brands: Garmin and Amazfit. Here, Garmin is known for its high-end products while Amazfit is known for its affordable products.

Amazfit vs Garmin

A few years ago, there was no debate, as Garmin was the only choice for serious athletes, while Amazfit was just for basic step counting. But things have changed now as Amazfit is releasing watches that look great and even offer almost the same features that are given by Garmin, but for half  the price.

Design and Comfort

Garmin watches are built to look like serious equipment with rugged and bulky looks. They look like they are designed to survive mud, mountains and even hard falls, while Amazfit watches look more like modern gadgets. They are sleeker and fashionable, similar to an Apple Watch.

I personally prefer Garmin watches, especially the expensive metal ones, as they feel solid and heavy. They feel premium, but they can be a bit bulky for people with small wrists. Whereas Amazfit watches are made from lighter materials like plastic or light metals. It feels like this watch is very light to wear. You might even forget that you are wearing one. This makes the Amazfit watch an excellent choice for tracking your sleep.

Note: While the Garmin watch itself is heavy, Garmin’s rubber bands (straps) are famous for being very soft and comfortable.

Heart Rate Monitoring

Both Amazfit and Garmin offer heart rate monitoring as a core feature of their smartwatches. They use built-in optical (PPG) sensors, which help to provide continuous, real-time heart rate data, even at rest and during exercise.

Here, Garmin generally leads in overall HR accuracy, especially with newer Elevate V5 sensors in Fenix 8 and in Epix Pro, but high-end Amazfit models like the Balance 2 with BioTracker 6.0 can rival or even beat some Garmin smart watches for the real-time heart rate monitoring.

Battery Life

If you are used to charging an Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch every single night, both of these devices will feel like a massive upgrade.

However, after living with both, I found that the battery anxiety feels very different depending on which one you wear.

I personally have a routine to charge my Amazfit watch every sunday as I typically get 7-8 days on a single charge. If you are turning on the Always-On Display, the battery drops to about 4-5 days. This is still decent, but it means that if you go on a week-long vacation, you definitely need to pack your charging cables.

Whereas, in Garmin watches, especially the Fenix 8, it is so powerful that it broke my habit of checking my watch’s percentage. With normal use, it gives you 2-3 weeks of battery life even when you are tracking multiple workouts.

Amazfit Zepp Vs Garmin Connect

Since you look at the app on your phone every day to check your metrics, it becomes important to pick the one that is easier for you to understand.

The Amazfit Zepp app features an LLM-powered Food Log that allows me to track my meals by simply taking a photo or entering a description via text and I feel that this is the best feature that I have found in a smart watch.

It has the ability to customize your watch, with 100+ watch faces and even this app has improved a lot recently. It uses lots of colors and simple visuals to show you your sleep score or a map of your run. It gives you the information you need without making it complicated.

Garmin’s app, Connect, feels like a paradise for people who love data because it shows so many graphs and numbers. While this app looks complex, it allows you to do advanced things that Amzafit can not do yet, like building a very specific workout plan on your phone and sending it directly to your watch.

You can even follow other Garmin users and cheer them on to earn badges for the different activities, which makes many people motivated.

More importantly, it also helps to track the hormonal cycle, which can be helpful for many female athletes.

Note: If you want an app that is simple and pretty, go with Amazfit. If you want an app that lets you plan complex trainings and makes you dig deep into data, then go with Garmin.

Price & Availability

Amazfit Active 2 is a fantastic budget watch, as it will cost you $130 USD. It is also one of the cheapest watches to offer Sapphire Glass, which is extremely hard to scratch. In some parts of the US, you can easily purchase this watch from Amazon, Best Buy and other authorized third-party retailers.

Garmin Fenix 8 is a luxury sports watch that starts at $999 USD and can go up to $1,200 USD if you want the larger size with solar charging and titanium material. You can find this watch in almost every part of the US. You can even purchase Garmin watches from Amazon, Best Buy, Garmin’s Official store, etc.

Final Verdict

If you look at who is improving faster, Amazfit wins clearly. They are putting features into a $130 watch that usually come in a $500 watch. They are even closing the gap very quickly.

So, if your goal is to stay active, lose some weight and track your sleep, save your money and go with an Amazfit smart watch, as it looks better, costs less and does 90% of what the average person actually needs.

But if you are training for a marathon or hiking alone in the wilderness, you need a Garmin. In those high-pressure moments, the price does not matter. You just need to know for a fact that the GPS and the battery are perfectly accurate.
