Apple Watch SE 3 vs SE 2: Should You Upgrade?

You know I’ve worn the Apple Watch SE 2 for a long time, so it feels like part of my wrist. It has survived gym sessions, accidental doorframe hits, and those mornings where it’s the only thing telling me I’m five minutes late for a meeting. So when the Apple Watch SE 3 arrived in late 2025, my first thought wasn’t “Wow!” In a head-to-head of Apple Watch SE 3 vs SE 2, what is actually different enough to make me give up my old friend?

Apple Watch SE 3 vs SE 2

You might know that people call this SE series the people’s watch. It isn’t meant to be a titanium tank like the Ultra or a medical lab like the Series 11. It’s the affordable, reliable choice. But after three years of the SE 2 holding down the fort, the SE 3 has finally landed with some surprising upgrades that actually change how the watch feels day-to-day.

Specifications

On paper, the differences between these two watches can look like a list of alphabet soup (SE 3 vs SE 2, LTPO vs OLED). But when you see them side-by-side, you start to see where Apple spent its upgrade budget.

Design And Built

If you put the Apple Watch SE 3 vs SE 2 next to each other on a table, you’d be forgiven for thinking they are the same. They share the same 40 mm and 44 mm aluminium cases and the same rounded square look.

However, the personality changes once you put them on. The SE 3 feels slightly more premium because of the Always-On display. With the SE 2, your wrist is just a black glass pebble until you move it.

Apple claims that its SE 3 glass is four times more crack-resistant, and while I didn’t go slamming mine against a brick wall to check the claims, it survived a few oops moments against a kitchen counter without a single scratch.

Note: If you have a drawer full of SE 2 straps, don’t throw them away! I swapped my favourite leather strap between the two models effortlessly.

Performance and Day-to-Day Experience

The SE 2 was never slow, but the SE 3 is somehow faster. It uses the S10 chip, which is the same found in high-end series like Apple Watch Series 11.

When I ask Siri to set a timer on SE 3 for 10 minutes, it happens almost instantly. On the SE 2, there was always that tiny, awkward pause where I wondered if it heard me.

Even swiping through the Smart Stack or opening the Workout app feels fluid.

Features and Sensors

This is where the SE 3 tries to justify its existence. For years, the SE line was considered basic. Now, it’s getting some of the cool stuff.

This is great for two things: deeper sleep data and much more accurate menstrual cycle tracking.

The SE 3 also adds 5G to the cellular model. So, if you’re the type of person who likes to go for a run without your phone, the connection is much faster and more reliable than the 4G on the SE 2. It’s a specification that finally trickled down to the budget model, and it makes the watch feel much more independent.

Health Features

The SE 3 feels more like a health companion. While the SE 2 is great for the basics. The biggest shift is in the data depth, all thanks to the new temperature sensor. The SE 3 provides FDA-approved Sleep Apnea notification and much more precise cycle tracking

On the SE 2, you get a simple summary of your night. On the SE 3, the Vitals app looks at your heart rate, respiratory rate, and wrist temperature to check my signals if I’m getting sick.

Apple doesn’t give you a single Readiness Score like some other brands, but you get a daily Sleep Score. It’s not just about how long you slept, but the quality of those sleep stages, like REM and Deep sleep. It is surprisingly accurate because it uses the new S10 chip to process movements and heart data more deeply.

Workout Tracking

If the SE 2 was your stopwatch, the SE 3 is more like your personal coach. Because of that faster S10 chip and the latest software, the workout experience feels more professional.

You get Workout Buddy as a new feature for the SE 3, which uses Apple intelligence to give you personalised, spoken motivation during your workout sessions.

Both the watches come with a training load feature, which means they can help you track workouts by comparing the intensity of your exercise over the last 7 days to your last 28 days. It tells you if you are steady, Well Above, Well Before, Well Above or Well Below your usual effort. It is the perfect tool to make sure you’re pushing yourself without burning out.

Battery Life and Charging

Here is the honest truth: both watches are rated for 18 hours. In the real world, that means you charge it once a day.

However, the SE 3 has a secret weapon: Fast Charging. On the SE 2, if I forgot to charge my watch and had a workout in 30 minutes, I was out of luck. On the SE 3, I can throw it on the charger while I’m showering and getting dressed, and I’ll have enough juice to last me the next 8-10 hours.

It also supports a much better Low Power Mode, which can stretch the life to about 32 hours. If you track your sleep (like me), the combination of fast charging and better efficiency means you rarely ever see the 10% battery warning.

Software Experience

Because the Apple Watch SE 3 has a faster S10 chip and new sensors, it has skills that the older model simply can’t do. Both watches run the latest watchOS, but the experience isn’t identical.

The SE 3 is built for the future. With 64GB of storage (double the SE 2), you can download more music, more apps, and more offline maps. Plus, because it has a newer chip, it will likely receive software updates for 2-3 years longer than the SE 2 will.

The new watch faces, like Flow and Exactograph, look stunning on the SE 3’s Always-On Display. On the SE 2, they look great too, but only for the few seconds the screen is actually turned on.

Price and Availability

The Apple Watch SE 3 comes in different variants. The 40 mm costs $249 USD, 44 mm costs $279 USD. The GPS variant costs $249 USD and the cellular with GPS costs $299 USD.

You can purchase the SE 3 watch from Apple’s official website and stores, Amazon and even from Best Buy.

Since Apple does not officially sell its older series after new launches, you can often find Apple Watch SE 2 at a discount at various retailers for $199-$211 USD. You can purchase them from different retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart.

Final Verdict

If I were heading towards the store today, I would choose the Apple Watch SE 3. Even though the SE 2 is a fantastic bargain, the Always-On display and Fast Charging on the SE 3 are quality-of-life features that you notice every single hour. Not having to flick your wrist just to check a notification or the time makes the watch feel much more like a natural part of your life.

While comparing the Apple Watch SE 3 vs SE 2, the Apple Watch SE 3 is the best choice if you want a good entry-level watch in the Apple ecosystem that feels modern and stays useful for a long time. It is perfect for first-time buyers because it has the newest S10 chip, meaning it will stay fast and get software updates for many years.
