What Does Core Sleep Mean On Apple Watch?

With all my work and busy schedule, I could not ignore my sleep cycle anymore. With dark circles as big as black holes, my skincare was crying in the corner. So I got my Apple Watch and started using its sleep tracking abilities.

What Does Core Sleep Mean On Apple Watch

So I gave it a go and woke up the next day feeling just okay, not tired but not super refreshed either, and guess what? When I checked my Apple Watch, it said I had 6 hours of CORE SLEEP? And a very little of REM and Deep sleep. So is Core Sleep just a fancy Apple way of saying “you slept, kind of?”

Let’s find out this sleep stage mystery here. Spoiler alert: Your Apple Watch knows more about your naps than your dog knows about your secrets!

What Even Is “Core Sleep,” Anyway?

Core Sleep on Apple Watch is the stage where you are between deep sleep and REM sleep. It is not as strong as the deep sleep and not as dream-filled as the REM sleep, but don’t take it lightly. It still plays an important role.

So, Core Sleep on Apple Watch means light sleep. Now Apple did not name it as light sleep because people might misunderstand its meaning, and hence it’s called Core Sleep.

On your Apple Watch, it means that your body is now starting to relax, your heart rate slows down, and you are resting, but not in your deepest sleep yet. It’s like your body is cruising in low gear and getting ready for more intense parts of the sleep.

Core Sleep vs REM Sleep vs Deep Sleep

Let’s break it down in a way even your 2 A.M. brain could get:

  1. Core Sleep: We can say this is the part of our sleep where we are not fully asleep, but we are getting there and are not awake either. In Core Sleep, our body starts to relax, and the heart rate and breathing rate slow down. The interesting part is that this covers the largest percentage of our sleep. Here we are just resting and recharging gently.
  2. Deep Sleep: Have you ever felt super grumpy after somebody woke you up? That is because you were woken up from your deep sleep. Deep sleep is your body’s repair zone. Here your muscles recover, your immune system gets stronger, and it is really hard to wake up from deep sleep and you might feel like a zombie if woken up.
  3. REM Sleep: REM sleep is where your brain is in full action. It stands for Rapid Eye Movement sleep and you dream a lot here, and your brain is busy sorting memories and boosting your mental sharpness. REM sleep makes your sleep really exciting and colourful with dreams.

Why Apple Thinks Core Sleep Deserves a Trophy?

While looking for the answers I wanted, I really wondered- Why does Apple break out Core Sleep at all? The answer is simple: because it’s the biggest part of your sleep cycle. You can also think of it as the main road your body travels while you are asleep.

After researching everything, I came to this conclusion: According to Sleep Scientists and Apple’s algorithms, Core Sleep plays a major role in regulating our memory, mood, and metabolism. I will say it is not the main act, but the whole show collapses without it.

So next time you see four hours of Core Sleep locked, don’t sigh, just applaud. That’s your foundation.

How Apple Watch Tracks Core Sleep?

One thing you need to understand is that your Apple Watch isn’t casting spells on you while you’re asleep, but it’s doing biometric gymnastics.

It uses:

  • Accelerometer data (your wrist movements), thanks to the motion sensor
  • Heart rate patterns
  • Machine learning magic (it is a Smart technology that learns from lots of sleep data.)

I agree that it cannot track brain waves like a sleep lab can, but it is surprisingly good at guessing what stage of sleep you are based on how still you are and how your heart is beating.

Want better results? Well, why don’t you just make sure that your watch fits snuggly, turn on sleep focus mode before bed and avoid late night, doom scrolling. I mean seriously, TikTok can wait!

Now, should you be obsessing over your Core Sleep? I say, probably not!

Here’s the deal: No doubt, it’s cool to know your sleep stats, but really obsessing over it won’t make you sleep better. In fact, stressing about sleep can actually mess it up. Yes, in fact, it is a real condition called Orthosomnia, and I am sure you don’t want to be caught up in that.

So I’ll suggest, don’t use your Apple Watch like a sleep coach with a whistle; rather think of it more like a helpful friend. Because at the end of the day, if you’re getting enough sleep and feeling okay during the day, then you are doing just fine. Even if your Core Sleep number doesn’t look Olympic level.

Wrap Up

So now, when you want to keep track of your sleep cycle, don’t squint while you look at your Apple Watch sleep stats. Just trust it, and more importantly, trust me because I have now helped you unlock the mystery of Core Sleep.

Core Sleep might not be as important as REM or deep sleep for you, but it’s still very important. It does the heavy lifting while you drool on your pillow.

And who told you all this? Oh right! Me. The one person smart enough to translate Apple Watch data into actual wisdom. You are welcome. Now go forth, nap nobly, and remember: even in sleep, you’re doing core work.
