Forget Smartwatches, You Might Want to Track Your Health With Lumia 2 Instead

Tech companies have spent the last decade fighting for space on our wrists and fingers. Watches got better at activity tracking and rings mastered sleep and recovery. But somewhere along the way, a lot of people got tired of having another thing constantly on their bodies, even while showering.

Lumia 2 Smart Earrings

Enter- smart jewellery, more specifically, smart earrings. Yes, earrings. The tech has moved from our hands to a body part we never thought would be digitalised, our ears. The spotlight in this category is on the Lumia 2 smart earrings. They’re so discreet that no one would be able to tell you’re wearing a health tracker.

What Are Lumia 2 Smart Earrings?

Lumia 2 looks like the perfect addition to your jewellery box. They look like your regular earrings and come in different variations- hoops, studs, or cuffs. The back of the earring, Lumia Core, is where things get interesting.

The Core houses sensors, processors and a swappable battery pack, meant to be worn on your left ear. Why left, you may ask? Because the left ear lobe is closer to the heart and this positioning matters for the kind of data Lumia is chasing.

It tracks your heart rate, menstrual cycle, sleep, steps, blood flow and more.

Design, Comfort, and Battery Life Expectations

On paper, Lumia 2 seems to be the solution for every person who doesn’t want to wear a smart watch to bed and a smart ring at the gym.

It is water-resistant enough to be worn in the shower and is made from non-allergenic materials like titanium and platinum. The battery packs are swappable, so you never have to remove the earrings and compromise on your data. Each battery pack has about 5-8 days of battery life.

But wait, never removing the earrings means wearing the same style of earrings every day with every outfit, right? Wrong. They come in different styles and colours– studs and hoops for people with piercings and even cuffs for people who don’t have a piercing. But the best part? Wear Your Own.

Yes, all thanks to Lumia’s patent-pending SwitchBack system, the Core can be attached to any of the standard push-back earrings you already own. This means, simple studs for the office, silver dangling earrings for the Christmas party and gold hoops on a date night- all without having to compromise on your data.

What Lumia 2 Tracks and Why Blood Flow Matters More Than You Think

Lumia 2; Smart Earrings Explained: Accuracy, Benefits and How Lumia Is Creating the Smallest Wearable Ever

The “world’s smallest wearable” has a lot of features and it tracks:

  • Heart rate
  • Heart rate variability
  • Sleep
  • Temperature
  • Menstrual cycle
  • Readiness score
  • Blood flow
  • Steps
  • Hydration

Every marker here seems familiar, but “blood flow” is the headline feature. Initially developed for people with conditions like POTS and Long COVID, Lumia realised that blood flow strongly correlates with energy, focus and lightheadedness, even when heart rate is normal.

Lumia constantly tracks blood flow to the head and can help in explaining how hydration, posture, movement, temperature, stress and even what you had for lunch can affect how you feel throughout the day.

What We Know About Accuracy So Far

The data collected with the Lumia 2, especially the blood flow, seems validating. It is particularly useful for people with conditions like POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), OH (Orthostatic Hypotension), ME/CFS (Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome) and long COVID

The data can be highly effective in detecting a POTS episode before it even happens and to take necessary precautions. Especially if you have a chronic condition, blood flow might drop first, resulting in a heart rate spike. So if you’re used to simple metrics, you may feel a massive difference while using Lumia.

We know that the data will be helpful, but what remains to be seen is how well it is captured. The swappable battery packs make charging hassle-free, but will the fit of the earring be comfortable and stable enough? And even if it is stable with the Lumia earrings, will it act the same with the earrings I own? I sure hope it does.

Why Earrings Might Be Better Than Watches or Rings for Health Tracking

Lumia’s founder, Daniel Lee, called his wrist full of wearables as “precious real estate”, and that stuck with me. He’s not wrong.

Watches are not comfortable to sleep in, rings move constantly and come off during workouts, earrings, on the other hand, stay put. They don’t twist and they don’t get slammed into dumbbells. And most people don’t even take them off while sleeping.

And we know stability matters more than anything for data quality, especially if that data is being collected from such a tiny piece of technology. More than that, the placement is also a surprisingly good place to measure physiological signals since the ears are closer to the brain.

Smart earrings are putting the ears on the map for wearable real estate.

How Much is the Lumia 2 Priced At and When Will It Be Available?

The base price of the Lumia 2 is set at $249. The beef I have with wearables is that I don’t want to pay a subscription fee over the cost of the product.

Lumia didn’t fix that problem. It has a monthly subscription of $9.99 to access full health insights. You can currently reserve your spot for $1 and access a 40% discount when they launch. The preorders for the US and Canada (except Quebec) will open in January and the shipping will begin in 2026; the date has not been disclosed.

Wrap Up

Not going to lie, smart earrings do feel a little gimmicky, but Lumia 2 makes a strong case. Wrist and fingers are not the final destination for health tracking. Ears offer stability, proximity to the brain and a chance to collect blood flow data, which is something that has been ignored by consumer tech.

There are still a lot of questions around comfort, data accuracy and whether people with chronic illness will actually benefit from it, but as far as innovation goes, this is one of the most thoughtful ones I’ve seen in a while.

Or maybe that’s just my undiagnosed brain fog talking.
