My Oura Ring is best at tracking my health vitals. But I often avoid wearing my precious smart ring during heavy workouts. Why? Honestly, I’m afraid of scratching it. But that leads me to another problem – losing my workout data.
Here comes my Apple Watch to the rescue, what could be better than an Apple Watch tracking health vitals during heavy workouts? All I needed to do was connect my Oura ring to Apple Watch and Bingo! It works amazingly!
Ideally, there are two ways to connect Oura to Apple Watch, via Apple’s Companion App and via Apple Health app. I’ve shared the ways to connect both below.
Use The Apple Watch Companion App
Both Gen2 and Gen3 users are privileged to connect the Apple Watch Companion App with Oura Ring. The minimum requirements for the software version of the devices are as follows:
- iOS 16 [iPhone version]
- watchOS 9 [Apple Watch OS version]
- Apple Watch Series 4
- Oura App version 4.8.1
Before beginning, make sure that your Apple Watch and the Oura app are synced with your iPhone. If the Oura app is not downloaded and synced on the same iPhone that connects to the Apple Watch, the user can only download the Oura app on the Watch but cannot use it.
Method 1: Download Oura from the Watch App on the iPhone
Before beginning, note that the Watch app can only be downloaded on iPhones that are compatible with iOS 10.0 or later.
- Launch the Watch App on your iPhone.
- Go to My Watch tab.
- Look for Available Apps and find Oura under it.
- Tap the install button next to Oura.
Wait till the installation is completed.
Method 2: Download Oura on the Apple Watch (without iPhone)
You can also download the Oura app directly on your Apple Watch. Here is how to download Oura app on Apple Watch:
- Go to the app tray on your Watch.
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Oura.
- Tap “Get” and wait for the download.
After installation, you must launch the Oura app on your iPhone, log in, and sync at least once; only then will the Oura data appear in the companion app.
What Data Is Synced With Apple Watch Companion App?
In the companion app, you can find only three types of Oura data. Here is the list:
Readiness | Sleep | Activity |
---|---|---|
Readiness Score | Sleep Score | Activity Score |
Resting heart rate | Total sleep | Activity goal progress |
Heart rate variability | Time in bed | Total burn |
Body temperature | Sleep efficiency | Walking equivalency |
Respiratory rate | Resting heart rate | Steps |
Readiness contributors | Sleep contributors | Activity contributors |
Note: When the “Rest Mode” is active on the Oura app (iPhone), then only Readiness and Sleep Score will be available on the Apple Watch and not the Activity Score.
Sync Apple Watch With Oura Via Apple Health
Oura Gen2 users are eligible to integrate Apple Health with the Oura Ring. However, Gen3 users will require an active membership for Apple Health integration.
While connecting Apple Watch with Oura via Apple Health, the first thing I had to do was connect Oura to Apple Health, then Apple Health to Apple Watch.
Connect Oura Ring To Apple Health
1. Open Oura App and tap on the hamburger icon (Menu) in the top left corner.
2. Go to Settings.
3. Under Data Sharing, you will find Apple Health. Tap on it.
5. Now, you will see a toggle for Connect to Health. Turn it on.
6. After you have turned the toggle on, the below-added screen will pop up automatically. Next click on Turn On All or toggle on the button next to the feature that you want to sync.
But if this screen doesn’t show up automatically, or you want to manually select the permissions after you have already done the setup, then tap on Open Health as shown below:
7. Now that Apple Health is open on your iPhone, let’s share data with Oura.
8. Tap on your Profile Picture.
9. Go to Privacy, then select Apps and Services.
10. Choose Oura.
11. Enable the toggle button next to the data that you want to share with Oura.
Connect Apple Health to Apple Watch
- Open Apple My Watch App and tap on Start Pairing.
- Tap on Start Up for Myself.
- Now, it will search for your Apple Watch. Follow the in-app instructions to set up your Watch. By default, it will turn on all the options, and the data will be available on Apple Health.
What Data is Synced With Apple Health?
You may not export all Apple Health data to Oura, but trust me, most of the significant workout data can be exported. Here is the list of data that you can sync between Oura and Apple Health:
Data Imported from Apple Health to Oura | Data Exported from Oura to Apple Health |
---|---|
Date of Birth | Height |
Height | Weight |
Sex | Active Energy |

Active Energy | Mindful Minutes |

If you think Oura data can automatically sync with the Apple Watch app in real-time, you are wrong! I have to open the Oura app on my iPhone every day to sync my Oura data with the watch. I have tried both the Apple Health and Companion apps, and both worked amazingly. Finally, I was relieved to sync my activity data from Apple Watch to Oura Ring for better health insight.
Let’s try syncing Oura with the Apple Watch following the method I used for better health and wellness monitoring. Let me know if you have any difficulties. I may help you with the app integration troubleshooting too!
