Although I love my Apple Gadgets, one thing I am most wary of is how the ecosystem relies heavily on Apple products. After much consideration, I finally got an Apple Watch, but my heart sank when I learned that it does not support Google Fi.

The surprising part is that Google Fi does support iPhones and iPads. So, why not Apple Watch? Why is there a disparity? To clear the air and provide some clarity, here’s why Google Fi does not support the Apple Watch.
Why Google Fi Does Not Support Apple Watch
Requires Cellular Plans
Just like every other Apple Watch, my Apple Watch runs on a system called eSIM pairing. This feature enables every Apple user to utilize and share their cellular data plan with their watch. Since the cellular plan comes with eSIM authentication and provisioning, Google Fi is not suitable to support these particular features.
Google Fi Is Built To Support Google Services
Another primary reason is that Google Fi was made to support Google services and Android. Google Fi provides two types of networks: T-Mobile and US Cellular. Also, it switches back and forth between these networks, which Apple Watches do not allow. Moreover, to support this specific type of network, Google Fi comes with its eSIM.
Relationship Between Apple And Google
Now, this particular SIM is not compatible with Apple’s architecture. In business terms, for it to be compatible with Apple gadgets, Google needs to work on its models, which would mean extra expenditure. If not this, they need to negotiate with Apple on specific grounds, which again might not be feasible for both companies. Since their sole focus is not on Apple, they designed it otherwise. I see it as Apple Watch not being a significant target for Google Fi users, which is why Google Fi does not support Apple Watch.
Limited iOS Features
By now, you already know that Google Fi and Apple Watch are not compatible. Some other areas where they are not cooperative are- voicemail, iMessage, and NoVoltE. Moreover, Google Fi does not have its own companion app; hence, it lacks connectivity issues.
No iCloud Sync
With all of my Apple gadgets, I am logged into my iCloud. This allows me to sync all the data on my devices. However, Google Fi does not support cellular features; hence, it can’t be used for calling and other LTE functions, limiting the Apple Watch’s potential.
What Alternatives Can You Use To Connect Google Fi to an Apple Watch
Method 1: Bluetooth Pairing
Even if your Apple Watch cannot connect with Google Fi directly, your iPhone can. In this situation, you can pair your iPhone and Apple Watch together using Bluetooth. Of course, this method is not ideal, but you can make calls or receive and send messages through this feature.
Method 2: Use GPS Only Apple Watch
If you do not rely heavily on texting and calling, you can use a GPS-only Apple Watch. This watch allows users to send and receive texts and even make calls if their iPhone is connected to Google Fi.
Wrapping Up
My final opinion is that if you are using a cellular Apple Watch, you should not get Google Fi. Cellular models require eSIM, which Google does not support. Another major drawback is that you would need a secondary carrier, which could be an unnecessary expenditure of money.
Cellular Apple Watch users should also remember that they cannot use family setup if they are using Google Fi. You will also be restricted from using other features like GPS, calling, and texting. All in all, Google Fi works wonderfully with iPhones but not very much with Apple Watches.
However, if you have a GPS-only Apple Watch, you do not need to rely on Google Fi for most of the features. Since I heavily rely on my watch most of the time, I would not get Google Fi for myself. However, based on your requirements, lifestyle choices, and budget, you can make a wise decision that will be favorable for you.
