One day, I was halfway to the office when my phone buzzed with one of those slightly dramatic alerts: “AirPods left behind”. Then what? Instant panic! A lot of questions started rising in my head. Did I drop them? Leave them on the kitchen counter or in my room?

After 30 seconds of detective-level mental retracing, I remembered I intentionally left them at home. I was not planning to use them that day, and that was all, but that notification did give me a little scare.
The “notify when left behind” feature is a solid backup plan for forgetful brains like mine, but when it pings me every time, I walk out the door without my AirPods, even on purpose, it gets annoying fast.
So after one too many false alarms, I thought it’s time to figure out how to turn the feature off or at least get it to chill out. Just like that, I actually did figure it out. If you are over the unnecessary alerts, too, let me help you fix it
Why You Are Getting These Notifications
So here’s what’s actually going on. This left-behind thing is part of Apple’s Find My setup. When “Notify When Left Behind” is turned on, your iPhone starts acting like a low-key bodyguard for your AirPods. The moment they are no longer near your phone and you are not in a place Apple recognizes as safe, you get a little digital poke.
Now that is super handy, if you are, say, working at a cafe, getting into a cab, or rushing through an airport and accidentally leave your AirPods behind. But if you purposely left them behind and went on to deal with your day, it can really get annoying getting those notifications. It’s like “Calm down, Siri. I know where they are.”
Turn Off AirPods Left Behind Notification
If you are tired of being reminded every time that your AirPods are not surgically attached to your ear. Here is how to shut off the notifications:

- Open the Find My app on your iPhone
- Tap the Devices tab at the bottom
- Select your AirPods from the list
- Scroll down and tap Notify when left behind
- Toggle notify and left behind off.
That’s it! No more, you forgot your AirPods messages when you very much didn’t.
Pro Move: Add Exceptions Instead Of Going Full On Ghost
I think the smart thing to do here will be to add trusted locations to silence the notification at specific places because these alerts are useful, but not every time you leave your AirPods at home, right? Here’s how to do it.

- Go to the Find My app on your iPhone
- Tap on the Devices tab
- Select your AirPods
- Tap on Notify when Left behind
- Add a New location under notify me except at.
- Choose a location like home or work
- Adjust the Geo fence circle to your liking
- Tap Done
That’s it, done. Now, you will only receive alerts when you forget your AirPods somewhere, not on that safe list. Win-win situation, right?
When Shouldn’t You Turn It Off?
I get it, these alerts can be annoying, but they are not totally pointless. Honestly speaking, this feature does exist for a reason. If you have ever left your AirPods behind at some place, because of your absentmindedness, that little buzz on your phone can be the difference between “phew” and “oh, there goes $250”.
So yeah, the pro of these notifications is clear. It saves you from losing them for good. It’s like a digital safety net, especially if you are someone who tends to forget where you left your stuff, and no judgment, I am no different.
On the flip side, let’s talk cons. Let’s talk about why you shouldn’t turn it off and what can go wrong if you do.
- Without the notification, the chance of accidentally leaving your AirPods behind and losing them will increase.
- Then you will have to remember to check for your AirPods yourself all the time, as your iPhone will no longer remind you.
- In situations where you do actually forget your AirPods, you won’t get an alert, which will cause inconvenience if you really need them.
So here’s what I say: before you turn the whole thing off completely, take a second and ask yourself, Do I really misplace them that often? If yes, maybe just tweak the settings like I just taught you and add exceptions for safe places.
Balance right? Keep the helpful part and ditch the annoying part.
Wrap Up
I think smart notifications should actually be, well, smart. It shouldn’t be like a passive-aggressive reminder every time you dare to leave your AirPods behind for five minutes.
Luckily, Apple does give you the tools to make it all work your way. You just have to use them wisely.
With all this information that I have shared with you, go ahead, leave your AirPods at home, yes, on purpose, take that walk, and enjoy a moment of freedom, notification-free, and hey, if you do end up leaving them behind for real, you actually know what to do. You’re welcome.
