How to Find Your Apple Watch if It’s Dead

If you’ve lost your Apple Watch that has a completely drained battery, the sad part is that you won’t be able to ping it using any of the methods I have mentioned earlier. You will have to look for it physically, and it’s probably wedged somewhere under your bed or your couch, so check again.

Now, if it’s still not found and if the Apple Watch has Find My turned on, head to the Find My app on your iPhone or iCloud account on the web. Here, you will be able to access the last location of your Apple Watch before it runs out of battery. This is your last chance of finding it physically at this location.

How to Activate Lost Mode

If you’re unable to access the last location of your Apple Watch, you can use Lost Mode to lock certain information from getting into the wrong hands.

  1. Open Find My on your iPhone or log in to iCloud on a web browser with the Apple ID that is connected to your Apple Watch.
  2. Under the Devices tab, tap the Apple Watch that you’re unable to locate.
  3. Tap Lost Mode and then tap Continue
  4. If the Apple Watch does not have a passcode set, this is where the iPhone will prompt you to create a passcode for the Apple Watch.
  5. The screen will then prompt you to enter a phone number that you can be contacted on.
  6. Next, you can optionally enter a message that will be displayed on the watch face as soon as the watch is turned on. This is helpful in case someone finds the watch, and this can help them return the watch to the owner.
  7. Tap Activate, and you will receive an email confirming that your Apple Watch has been put in Lost Mode.

Deactivate Lost Mode

To deactivate Lost Mode, when you finally find your Apple Watch, tap Unlock and enter the watch’s password. This will turn off the Lock Mode automatically.

If you wish to deactivate the Lost Mode on your Apple Watch through your iPhone:

  1. Open the Find My app, and under the Devices tab, select the Apple Watch that was put in Lost Mode.
  2. Tap Lost Mode and tap Turn Off Lost Mode > Turn Off.

On your web browser:

  1. Sign in to iCloud using the Apple ID associated with your Apple Watch.
  2. Click the Menu icon on the top right corner next to your Apple ID photo and select Find My.
  3. In the list of All Devices, select the Apple Watch that was put in Lost Mode.
  4. Tap Lost Mode > Stop Lost Mode, then tap Stop Lost Mode again to confirm.

Safety tips if you lose your Apple Watch

  • I would strongly suggest that the first thing you do is put your watch in Lost Mode so as to block anyone from accessing your important information, such as your Apple Pay account.
  • The next thing you should do is change your Apple ID password to protect your iCloud account.
  • Disable the cellular connection on your Apple Watch by contacting your cellular service provider.
  • Contact your local police department and report the device as stolen or lost.

Wrap Up

Although Apple’s Find My is very helpful in situations where I keep my watch somewhere and totally forget about it, it doesn’t work the same when my Apple Watch has a drained battery.

Even after following all the instructions and putting your watch into Lost Mode, should you still not find your Apple Watch, please consider reporting your device as stolen or lost at the police station. This will help you avoid letting personal information fall into the wrong hands.
