While the Fairbuds XL never felt uncomfortable, they definitely feel more present on the head. You feel the 330 grams of weight after a few hours. They even grip your head a bit tighter, which is great for staying stable if you are walking, but they can get a little warm during long sessions. 

Sound Quality

While listening to podcasts and acoustic tracks on the Fairbuds XL vs Sony WH-1000XM5, the Fairbuds XL felt like it was clean and balanced. The 40 mm drivers have been updated for 2025 to offer more punchier bass and clearer highs. They sound great even in daily usage. I found myself using Sony’s app more often, mainly because of features like Speak-to-Chat, which automatically pauses your music when you start talking. Sony’s app is very smart and can even change your settings based on where you are, like at home or at the gym.

While the Fairbuds app is simpler, I felt it was more set-it-and-forget-it, which I actually prefer. It gives you a basic equalizer to change the sound, but it doesn’t track your location or try to be too smart, which feels more private and straightforward.

Battery Life

In my usage, both easily lasted multiple days of casual listening. The Sony XM5 comes with a huge 1200 mAh battery, giving about 30 hours even with the best noise-canceling turned on.

The Fairbuds XL comes with 800 mAh of battery, which gives about 26 hours with ANC on. While this is slightly less, the Fairbuds have a huge advantage as the battery is replaceable.

Connectivity

The Sony XM5 uses Bluetooth 5.2, which is slightly more power-efficient and stable than the Fairbuds’ 5.1.

Both headphones support Multipoint, which lets you connect to your phone and laptop at the same time. On the Sony XM5, the switch was seamless, if a call came on my phone while I was watching a video on my laptop, it handled the transition perfectly. The Fairbuds XL handled basic switching well, but the Sony felt a bit more polished and faster.

After using both, I personally like the new Fairbuds XL due to its repairability and even the sound is good as it comes with 40 mm drivers with ANC. It is also comfortable to use, thanks to its padding.

But I do not think that there’s a single better choice here. It totally depends on what you value:

So, I suggest you buy Sony WH-1000XM5 if you want the best noise-canceling in the world, you fly often, and you want your music to sound as detailed as possible.
