How to Update watchOS Directly on Apple Watch

While you do require your iPhone for more important tasks on your Apple Watch, luckily,  the watchOS update is not one of them. Yes, you heard that right- no iPhone required. And when it works, it feels refreshingly simple. No juggling between devices, no double-checking if the phone or the watch has ample battery. Just the watch, a good Wi-Fi connection and a little bit of patience.

watchOS update Directly on Apple Watch

Whether you are trying to update your Apple Watch without an iPhone nearby or your watch refuses to install the latest version, this article walks you through how to update watchOS directly on Apple Watch. Step by step and what to do when things don’t go as planned.

I promise you I haven’t filled this article with “just restart it” advice repeated over and over again. Real requirement, exact steps and fixes that will actually work when a watchOS update won’t install.

Quick Steps to Update watchOS on Apple Watch (No iPhone Required)

Updating the OS directly from the Apple Watch has been possible since watchOS 6. If you have everything set up and ready to go, here’s how to install a watchOS update directly on your Apple Watch:

Settings > General > Software Update > Download and Install

Requirements

If, in case, your watchOS update fails, then it must be missing either one of these requirements. Make sure to check this before you hit Download and Install on the latest software update.

Compatible Apple Watch

It is no news that not all updates are available on every Apple Watch model. If your watch is really old and does not support an update, there is no workaround for it. The update won’t install, neither directly nor via your iPhone.

For example: watchOS 26 supports Apple Watch Series 6 and onwards. Older models like the Apple Watch Series 5 and previous versions simply won’t see the update.

Compatible iPhone (yes, even when you’re not using it)

No, you’re not hallucinating. Even if you are directly installing the watchOS update on your Apple Watch, Apple still checks iPhone compatibility behind the scenes.

An older iPhone trying to install the latest watchOS can block the update, even when the watch itself is compatible. For example, watchOS 26 requires an iPhone 11 or newer, running iOS 26 or later. This is why some users tend to see endless errors while trying to update their watchOS.

Wi-Fi connection

For any update to be installed, a stable, strong Wi-Fi connection is required. To check, head to the Control Center of your Apple Watch and look for the blue Wi-Fi icon.

Cellular alone is not stable enough for a watchOS update, therefore, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both required.

At least 50% battery with a charger and power source nearby

This is a very strict requirement from Apple, the watch’s battery must be at least 50% and even then, it must be connected to a charger on a power source.

If either of these conditions fails, the installation pauses automatically and it may even cause issues with the update (not that I have ever been tempted to try it).

Enough free storage

Just like the iPhone, major watchOS updates require a lot of free space on your device. If the storage isn’t enough, the update will not be downloaded.

Update from Watch Settings

Once you are sure all the above requirements are met, here is a step-by-step on how to update your operating system directly from the Apple Watch settings.

Step 1: Make sure your Apple Watch is connected to Wi-Fi.

To check if your Apple Watch is connected to Wi-Fi, open the Control Center and check if the Wi-Fi icon is blue and the signal is stable.

To access the Control Center, swipe up from the bottom of the home screen on watchOS 9 and earlier. Or simply press the side button (the one on the bottom of the Digital Crown) on watchOS 10 and later.

Step 2: Place the watch on its charger with a minimum of 50% battery.

As I explained before, this is a non-negotiable.

Step 3: Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

If an update is available, here is where you will see the version and release notes.

Step 4: Tap Download and Install.

The watchOS update can take around 15 minutes to an hour to download, depending on the storage it requires. It also does not show an ETA on when the update will finish, it will simply show a progress loading sign around the Apple logo on the watch screen.

Step 5: Enter your passcode if prompted and keep the watch on its charger until the update finishes.

The watch will restart as normal once the update is finished.

If the Update Won’t Install

Although the steps mentioned above seamlessly let you download an Apple watchOS update without requiring an iPhone, it may sometimes get stuck or refuse to install. Here are a few fixes for the same:

Restart the Apple Watch

You’re right, I did tell you in the beginning that I won’t give this obvious advice, but honestly, it works. And it usually fixes the problem right off the bat.

To do this:

  1. Hold down the Side Button for 5-10 seconds.
  2. Slide to power off.
  3. Wait for about 10 seconds and power it back on.
  4. Try the update again.

Force restart only when frozen

If the watch goes unresponsive, here’s how to force restart it:

  1. Hold the Digital Crown and the Side Button simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds.
  2. Release when the Apple logo appears.

Make sure not to force a restart if the progress ring is moving.

Free up storage

If the update won’t even download, make sure to free up some storage on your Apple Watch.

  1. Head to Settings > General.
  2. Tap on Storage and you can see which apps are using the most space on your Apple Watch.
  3. Delete the unused apps to clear up space on your Apple Watch for the new OS to download.
  4. Retry the update after freeing up space.

Turn on and off the Airplane mode

The only reason to do this is to reset any network connection. Enable the Airplane Mode on your Apple Watch from the Control Center and wait for about 10 seconds before turning it off.

Reconnect to the Wi-Fi and try installing the watchOS update again.

Restart your Wi-Fi router

If your Wi-Fi connection is unstable, try restarting your Wi-Fi router before updating your watch again.

Update with your iPhone

Yes, updating the watchOS directly is convenient, but if it’s not working for some reason, try updating your watchOS using your iPhone.

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Head to General > Software Update > Download and Install.

Keep your Apple Watch on its charger and near your phone during the update.

Unpair and re-pair your watch

This often solves the stubborn “unable to install update” error.

Simply unpair your Apple Watch from your iPhone, let it create a backup and pair it again. Try installing the watchOS update now.

Factory reset

Always do this step as a last resort, as it wipes your device completely clean and makes it function as a new watch. So if none of these fixes work:

  1. Head to Settings on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap General > Reset.
  3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  4. Set up as a new watch or restore a backup.
  5. Try updating the watchOS again.

Contact Apple support

While I’m pretty sure these fixes will get you through, if there’s still an issue with updating your Apple Watch, contact Apple Support.

Wrap Up

Updating the operating system on your Apple Watch directly is simple, but this process is also where things tend to break. The updates get stuck or the white loading circle takes forever to complete. And suddenly, what should’ve been a 20 minute watchOS update turns into an evening of force restarts and frantically checking Google and Apple Forums.

In most cases, the issue comes down to the prerequisites and hidden compatibility checks. Once you understand these clearly, the update process becomes seamless and quick. Whether you are updating directly from the Apple Watch or troubleshooting a stubborn install, patience and preparation matter more than repeated restarts.

Now you know how to update watchOS directly from your Apple Watch and even fixes for when this update fails.
