We all went from that phase when we are sitting on a noisy bus or in a loud cafe, desperately searching for budget ANC earbuds on our phones. At that point, we wanted something that actually blocks out the world’s noise without costing much.
The problem is that every brand promises Active Noise Cancellation, but very few actually deliver it. Some earbuds cancel noise while others just seem to cancel your expectations. I’ve used many earphones and I’ve usually ended up disappointed by the budget options.
But then, I started using the new Pixel Buds and here’s my Pixel Buds 2a review. I have used the previous Pixel Buds series and even the flagship Pro series. I was curious to see if these buds could fill the gap between the basic and Pro series. After wearing them every single day for everything from gym sessions to long work calls, I can guarantee you that this review is not based on only the spec sheet.

Design, Fit and Comfort

The first thing I noticed when I unboxed these Google Pixel Buds 2a is that they come in a classic pebble shape. The buds themselves have a glossy finish and a tiny, stemless design that tucks right into your ear. These buds also weigh around 4.7g, while the case weighs around 38.2g.
But the real magic is the twist-to-adjust fit. Instead of those long plastic wings that can poke your ears, these use a subtle silicon stabiliser. You can just pop them in your ear and give them a little turn. I wore these for a four-hour flight and honestly, I forgot that they were there. My ears didn’t feel tired, all thanks to the spatial vent that reduces that annoying pressure.
If I compared them to other budget buds that often feel like they might fall out if you sneeze, the Pixel Buds 2a stayed rock-solid even when I was out for a jog. They come with four different ear tip sizes, so most people will find a perfect sound vacuum.
ANC and Transparency in Real Life
Let’s talk about Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). In simple words, ANC uses microphones to listen to the noise around you and then it creates a sound wave to cancel it out.
In my daily usage, these buds were not the best as compared to my AirPods 4, but the Pixel Buds 2a are fantastic at drowning out the constant hum of my office’s air conditioner.
However, like most of the budget ANC earphones, they struggle a bit with sharp sounds like a baby crying or a coworker laughing loudly next to you.
The transparency Mode is where Google usually wins and the 2a is no exception. Its sound is very natural, not robotic. When I am at the grocery store, I can leave them in and talk to the cashier without feeling like I am shouting through a wall. It’s one of the most reliable transparency modes I’ve used in this price range.
Sound Signature and EQ

Google went for a very balanced sound with these earbuds. They use 11mm dynamic drivers to make sure your audio stays clear and crisp, no matter what you are listening to. The bass is punchy enough to keep you moving, but it isn’t overwhelming.
If you are a bass head who wants your brain to rattle, you might find these a little bit light. However, the vocals are where these buds really shine. Whether it’s a podcast or acoustic music, voices sound incredibly lifelike and easy to hear.
The best part is that you aren’t stuck with just one sound. If the default tuning doesn’t hit the spot, you can use the 5-band EQ in the Pixel Buds app to change tuning. As a listener who lumps between heavy rock and narrated audiobooks, I found that the heavy bass preset gave me exactly the energy I needed for the gym. For everything else, the standard setting worked perfectly.
Mic and Call Quality
I use these for my work meetings all the time. Indoors, the call quality is great and my voice sounds clear to the person on the other end.
Outdoor is a bit more of a challenge. Google uses AI-powered Clear Calling and wind-blocking mesh covers. In moderate wind, it works well. However, if you are standing next to a construction site or in a heavy storm, the person you are calling will definitely hear some background noise.
Battery and Charging
The battery life is a big step up in the Pixel Buds 2a series.
With ANC on, it gives about 7 hours of battery life on a single charge and with ANC off, it gives 10 hours on a single charge.
The charging case gives about 20 hours of charging with ANC on and 27 hours with ANC off. While some competitors offer long-lasting cases, this was more than enough to get me through a full work week of mixed use.
One of the impressive features of the Pixel Buds 2a is that it comes with a replaceable battery in the charging case, which is designed so that the batteries can be replaced within a few years of use.
These buds come with fast charging through a USB-C cable.
Pixel Buds 2a review for Android

If you are an Android user, these Pixel Buds 2a feel like they are part of your phone’s soul.
It gets connected easily to the phone whenever you open the lid. It comes with a multipoint feature, which means I can stay connected to my laptop and my phone at the same time. If a call comes in while I’m watching a video on my laptop, the buds switch automatically.
It comes with Gemini Integration, which means you can talk to Google’s AI assistant, which is a completely hands-free experience. You can even ask it to summarise your notifications.
The Find My Device is also a blessing. If you forget a bud somewhere, you can make it ring your phone from it.
If you are an iPhone user, don’t think that it will not connect to your device. Pixel Buds work as basic Bluetooth earbuds on an iPhone. But you won’t get the Google Assistant or the ability to customise settings through an app, they will still play music and take calls perfectly.
Price and Availability
Google Pixel Buds 2a are priced at $129 USD. You can purchase them from Google’s official site, Best Buy and even from Amazon.
They are available in 2 colour options: Iris and Hazel.
final verdict
What I like most about the Pixel Buds 2a is that they just work. They don’t try to be fancy with 100 different buttons. They focus on being comfortable, having a reliable connection and offering ANC that actually makes your life quieter.
I am choosing these as my daily drivers because they are the least stressful earbuds I’ve owned. I don’t have to fiddle with the fit and the Android integration saves me so much time every day.
In short, the Pixel Buds 2a show that Google has finally mastered the budget category. They aren’t perfect, but for the price, they are easily the best all-around choice for the average Android user.
