Choosing between the Pixel Buds 2a vs AirPods 3 is a big difference. It’s like choosing between a custom-tailored suit and a designer brand that’s one size too small. One might look iconic, but the other actually fits into your life.
I’ve spent the last few weeks swapping between these two daily. One morning, I even found myself standing in my kitchen with a Pixel phone in one hand and a coffee mug in the other and a truly confused expression on my face: which one should I actually wear today?
If you are an Android user, this choice may matter more than you think. AirPods are the cool choice and Pixel Buds 2a are the smart choice. But as I discovered, spec sheets rarely reflect how a product actually performs in everyday life.
In my Pixel Buds 2a vs Airpods 3 comparison, I’ll tell you what they’re actually like to use during calls, long walks and work sessions while sipping your morning coffee.

Fit and Comfort

The biggest difference you’ll notice immediately is how they sit in your ears.
The Pixel Buds 2a use a sealed design with silicon tips. Google added a twist-to-adjust stabilizer that is honestly a game-changer. I wore these for a three-hour flight and forgot they were there. They stay in my ear even when I am running on a track.
On the other hand, when we compare Pixel Buds 2a vs AirPods 3, the AirPods 3 have an open-fit design as they have no tips, just hard plastic. They are incredibly breathable, therefore, you will not get that blocked ear feeling. Whenever I looked down to tie my shoes, I felt that my AirPods would fall out.
If you have small ears or you move a lot, the Pixel Buds 2a win here. If you hate having buds that sit in the ear canal, then AirPods 3 are more comfortable, but they are less stable.
ANC and Transparency

This is a part where the Pixel Buds 2a vs AirPods 3 debate gets settled.
The Pixel Buds 2a come with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). It will not silence the world, but it’s enough to turn a noisy cafe into a quiet library. The Transparency Mode is also excellent, it sounds natural and doesn’t feel like a robot is whispering the sound of your surroundings into your ear.
The AirPods 3 offer no Active Noise Cancellation and no Transparency mode. When I used them on a noisy train, I had to turn the volume up hear my podcast because of the train noise. That alone is a major drawback for frequent travellers.
Even if you step up to AirPods 4 with ANC, those features don’t work on Android. The same limitation applies to Pixel Buds on an iPhone. In the end, how good your earbuds feel in daily use depends just as much on your phone as the earbuds themselves.
Sound Profile and Loudness
Apple’s AirPods 3 sound surprisingly good for in-ear earbuds. They have a warm sound with decent bass and they come with Custom high excursion Apple drivers. But because they don’t create that seal in your ear, that bass leaks out if you’re in a noisy place.
The Pixel Buds 2a use 11mm drivers and a 5-band EQ, which you can actually control through the Pixel Buds app. On Android, you get the full experience on the app with clear vocals and punchy bass.
Using AirPods on an Android phone is like driving a sports car with a speed limit. You will not be able to:
- Use Spatial Audio,
- You can’t see the case battery percentage easily without third-party apps and
- You can’t even update the firmware.
Mic and Call Quality
Google’s Clear Calling tech on Pixel Buds 2a is fantastic. I took a WhatsApp call while walking through a park and the person on the other end of the call said that my voice sounded like I was in my room.
Pixel Buds 2a are known as the AI sound specialists, as they are built for modern Android users. They feature a dual-microphone array in each bud, but the main thing here is the Google Tensor A1 chip and clear calling technology.
Google has added physical wind-blocking mesh covers over the mics to block the noise of the wind, competing head to head with Apple in the Pixel Buds 2a vs AirPods 3 battle.
Apple AirPods 3 are famous for their call quality. They use dual beamforming microphones and a speech-detection accelerometer that senses when you’re talking. In a quiet room, they sound incredible.
However, once you pair them with an Android Phone, you will lose the seamless magic. I noticed that while the hardware is great, the software doesn’t always play nice. During a few Google Meet sessions on my laptop, the AirPods 3 struggled to switch back to my phone when a call came in.
On an iPhone, you can toggle voice isolation. On Android, the voice isolation will not work for the AirPods. In loud environments, I found the AirPods 3 picked up more of the chatter around me than the Pixel Buds did, since they don’t have ANC.
Battery and Charging
In Pixel Buds 2a, you get 7 hours of listening time with ANC turned on, which can be stretched to a massive 10 hours if you turn ANC off.
The charging case provides a total of 20 hours in ANC on and 27 hours in ANC off. While the total capacity is lower than Apple’s AirPods 3.
Pixel Buds 2a uses USB-C to charge, which is the same as your phone’s.
AirPods 3, on the other hand, are designed differently. The buds themselves last about 6 hours, but the case extends up to 30 hours of total listening time.
The AirPods 3 uses lightning port to charge, which becomes a real problem sometimes, as most devices use USB-C and the charger is easily available in case you forget to carry your own.
AirPods 3 also support wireless charging, which can be charged with your Apple Watch charger, while on the other hand, Google Pixel 2a does not support wireless charging.
Controls and Features

This is the part I want you to pay attention to. If you use an Android phone, your choice here determines whether your earbuds feel like a smart tool or just a dumb pair of earbuds.
The Pixel Buds 2a aren’t just earbuds, they are like an extension of your phone. Since I use an Android daily, the level of integration here is genuinely addictive.
Google Pixel Buds 2a come with Gemini directly integrated into the buds. You don’t even have to touch your phone. I can say, “hey Google”, read my notification and it will summarise my emails and texts while I’m carrying groceries. You can even use Gemini Live for a natural conversation.
The Pixel Buds 2a support Multipoint connectivity, which is a lifesaver. I can be watching a movie on my Android tablet and if my phone rings, the buds automatically switch the audio to my phone. When I hang up, they switch back.
Through the Pixel Buds app, you can remap almost every gesture. Don’t like the press and hold for ANC? Change it to trigger your assistant. You also get a 5-band custom EQ to tune the sound exactly how you like it.
If you lose a bud somewhere in the room, you can use the Find Device feature in the Pixel app to make your buds produce beap sound or in the Find Hub app.

On the other hand, using AirPods 3 on Android is a bit of an isolating experience. Apple doesn’t actually make any apps for Android. In Apple AirPods 3, the standard touch control on the stem of the earbud cannot be customised.
When using AirPods 3 with an Android phone, you can’t customise double-tap or press controls from Android itself. To change how the gesture works, you need to pair the AirPods with an iPhone and adjust the controls there and then reconnect them to your Android phone. The AirPods will retain those settings.
You will also not be able to see your battery percentage on your home screen, and you’ll not be able to update the firmware. When I take an AirPod out of my ear that’s paired with my Android phone, the music keeps playing even though ear detection doesn’t work on Android for AirPods.
Price and Availability
Google Pixel Buds 2a are priced at $129 USD, which can be purchased from Google’s official site, Best Buy and even from Amazon.
Since Apple does not officially sell AirPods 3 anymore, you can often find them discounted at various retailers for $120-$170 USD. You can purchase them from Amazon, Walmart and even from Best Buy.
Final Verdict
If I had to choose one for daily use as an Android user, I would choose Pixel Buds 2a because they offer a complete package at a lower price. You get ANC, which is great during traveling and a fit that doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable. It also comes with an app to control your settings, which is a non-negotiable feature for me.
You can also choose the AirPods 3 if you absolutely hate silicone ear tips or if you have a plan on switching to an iPhone soon but keep in mind the ANC won’t work on Android.
In the Pixel Buds 2a vs AirPods 3 battle, Google has built something that just works better than Apple AirPods 3 for its users.
