The first thing I unusually do every morning before leaving bed is to sync my Oura data. Surprisingly, I found my Oura app is not updating data today. For a few seconds, I was frustrated, but I happened to find the solution quicker than I thought.

Dealing with this issue can be a real struggle. If you are in the same boat, let’s find out how I fixed Oura Ring’s not updating issue.

Why Your Oura Ring Is Not Updating?

There could be multiple reasons why your Oura Ring firmware or app data is not updating. I figured out a couple of reasons on my own; the rest is what Oura told me.

  1. If the network connection is poor or the Bluetooth connection is unstable, then the app data updating could fail (or be interrupted).
  2. If Oura battery health is 30% or lower, both the firmware update and the app data update could be stalled.
  3. If the device’s OS is not up-to-date, then app data update could be interrupted.

Fix Oura Ring Firmware Not Updating Issue

I’m a Gen3 user; hence, I have the privilege to enable the Automatic Firmware Update option. Gen2 ring users can update firmware only manually. However, in both cases, users can face issues. For both cases, following five troubleshooting steps can help.

1. Update Your Smartphone OS

I noticed if the device’s OS is not up-to-date, it can interrupt the data update on the app. The back-dated version of the OS may not support the Oura Firmware update; hence, make sure your Android or iPhone’s OS is updated before updating the Oura Firmware.

Also, sometimes, a newer version of the OS is downloaded on the phone by itself but not installed automatically. I don’t know why, but whenever this happens in my Samsung, the whole device starts malfunctioning until I install the new update.

2. Uninstalling & Reinstalling The Oura App

When I found that Oura Ring was not showing data, the first thing I did was uninstall the Oura app. Then, I reinstalled it again. Uninstalling and reinstalling the Oura app can help to reappear the Firmwire update message card on the home tab.

Also, if your Oura Ring is not updating firmware even if the automatic firmware update is on, then this step can resolve the issue, too.

3. Check Oura Ring’s Battery Health

The Oura Ring battery should be at least 30% charged. If the Ring’s battery health is lower than 30%, the firmware update, including some other features, won’t work. Hence, always make sure that your ring has a minimum of 50% battery health to run all functions and features smoothly.

4. Check The Bluetooth Connectivity

Even if you know that your device’s Bluetooth setting is on, the app may not sync with the Oura Ring. I personally noticed this when I tried to sync my Oura app with the ring while placing the ring on the charger. The distance between my phone and the ring was around 3 meters. The ring didn’t sync with the app simply because it was a little far.

Hence, I recommend placing the device as near as possible to the ring so that it has stable Bluetooth connectivity and can update smoothly.

5. Troubleshooting For Automatic Firmware Updates

1. Launch The App After The New Firmware Version Is Launched

If you haven’t opened your Oura app once after the new firmware version is launched, your ring won’t update automatically. Only once the app is launched, after the new firmware version is rolled out, the ring will update automatically.

2. Disable The Oura App Airplane Mode

When the Oura app Airplane Mode is enabled, the Oura Ring is practically detached from the Oura app. Therefore, if the Airplane Mode is on, then there is no way that the ring will update firmware automatically. Hence, to update the firmware, you must disable the Airplane mode.

To turn on the Airplane mode, place the Oura ring on the charger and wait for a few seconds. When you place the ring on charging, the Airplane mode deactivates in a few seconds. However, if it does not work, force-close the Oura app and relaunch it.

3. Close Workout Heart Rate Feature

There are a few features, like Workout Heart Rate and Explore session, that never let automatic firmware updates work. I noticed this and talked to Oura.

According to Oura, when these features are running, Oura Ring measures real-time HR/HRV. I had to close these features to update the firmware.

4. Automatic Update Won’t Work When You Are Sleeping

Once I found the new firmware version was rolled out last night, as my colleague had updated. But my Oura Ring firmware wasn’t updated automatically. I was wondering why. This is because I went to bed early! I was sleeping when the firmware rolled out, so I missed it.

Later, I came to know that the automatic firmware update would not work if you were sleeping or if the Oura Ring detected nighttime biosignals. Eventually, I got the firmware update very next day after I woke up.

6. Troubleshooting For Manual Firmware Updates

1. Keep Your Device Screen Unlocked

When running firmware updates manually, I think you should try to keep the device’s screen unlocked. In this way, the updating process is uninterrupted and you can keep an eye on the progress of the firmware update.

2. Restart The Device

If you are unable to find the firmware update card on the Oura home tab, don’t fret. I suggest you force-close the app and restart the device. Sometimes, it‘s because of an app glitch why the update card does not appear on the home tab.  I think restarting the device once can make the update card pop up.

3. Make Sure Signal Interference Is Low

I noticed updating Oura ring firmware could be interrupted by signal interference. Hence, I suggest performing firmware updates where the environment has a minimum number of smart electronic gadgets. In this way, you can avoid unwanted device signals that can interrupt the firmware update. As simple as that!

4. Try A Different Device

If your smartphone and app are both updated, yet you can’t find the firmware update card on the Oura home tab, then try another phone. If there are some unknown issues or interference on your old smartphone, using a new one can solve the problem.

Oura Ring App Data Not Updating Issue

By now, you know there’s no firmware update, and it definitely is the app that’s not updating the data. Or maybe the ring is not syncing with the app due to any reason. Here I have made a quick list for you to do some pretty basic troubleshoots.

  1. Make sure your Oura Ring is connected to one device only.
  2. Make sure your device has the latest OS version to support the Oura app.
  3. Restart your device.
  4. Force close the Oura app and open it again
  5. Delete the Oura app and reinstall it again.
  6. Make sure Location permissions are enabled for the Oura App.
  7. Place the ring closer to the phone
  8. Try Bluetooth reset; if it does not work, you can try Hardware reset.

Moreover, I have explained some steps in detail that I think you will need more help with.

Hardware Reset

As I have mentioned above, using the hardware reset method could be helpful if the Oura app is not updating data. Here is how to do it:

  1. Place the ring on the charger.
  2. Use your finger to keep the ring on the charger and tap the charger on the flat surface rapidly.
  3. Wait for a minute and then reopen the Oura app to check whether it is updating again. If not, you have to repeat the same steps a couple more times (sometimes, the hardware reset takes time to activate).

Bluetooth Reset

Try the Bluetooth reset for the Oura ring. I found this step significantly helpful in fixing Oura Ring not updating on the app on both Android and iPhone:

  1. Place the Oura ring on the charger.
  2. Turn off the Bluetooth mode of your phone.
  3. Force close the Oura App.
  4. Again turn on the Bluetooth mode of your phone.
  5. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Next, remove your ring (“oura_A038xxx”) from the device’s list.
  6. Next, launch the Oura app and establish the Bluetooth connection again by following the on-screen instructions.

Enable Location Permissions

When the Oura app was updated to the latest version, an information card popped up. I tapped on the “Continue” button to enable location tracking. If you tap on “No thanks” instead of “Continue,” you need to enable location permission manually now. Here is how to do it:

  1. Tap on the hamburger icon in the top left corner of the Home screen.
