Because of the form factor, I personally don’t like to sleep with a bulky watch, as it often makes me wake up with an imprint on my wrist. I even sometimes take it off in the middle of the night, which results in losing valuable data, which is why I prefer smart rings for sleep data.

Like smart watches, smart rings are also waterproof. You can wear them in the shower, in bed and even at work as they are stylish too. 

While rings are comfortable for cardio, they can be annoying for weightlifting. Holding a heavy barbell with a smart ring can pinch your skin or scratch the ring itself. Many lifters end up taking their rings off during the heavy sets, which will become a major problem in tracking their health.

Real-time metrics vs. Passive tracking:

This is the biggest difference. A smart watch is an active partner. Like you just need to look at your wrist to see your pace, heart rate zone, or split time.

Smart rings are considered passive as they record data in the background to be viewed after you are done with the activity. If you need to know your heart rate within a second, a ring would not help you in this.

GPS:

As of now, most smart rings still do not have a built-in GPS. They rely on connected GPS, which means you have to carry your phone with you to track your distance when you are out for a walk or a hike.

While smart watches like Garmin or Apple have built-in GPS that helps you track your place without the need to carry your phone.

Blood Oxygen and VO2 Max:

Both devices can track SpO2 and estimate VO2 Max, but smartwatches tend to be more accurate during high movements because they have a larger surface area against the skin.

Workout Modes:

Smart watches support hundreds of specific modes, from pickleball to swimming. At the same time, smart rings are still catching up. With leaders like Oura and Samsung adding automatic workout detection, they often struggle to distinguish between similar activities, such as lifting weights or carrying groceries.

Battery Life Comparison of Smart Rings and Smartwatches

Consistency is the key to fitness tracking. If your device is dead, how can you get your health data?

Smart Rings:

You generally get 4-7 days on a single charge. This is huge for consistency because you don’t have to worry about charging it every night. You can go on a weekend trip without the need for a charger. 

Smart Watches:

An Apple Watch or Pixel Watch usually needs charging after every 24-48 hours. Heavy-duty sports watches like Garmin Fenix can go up to a week, but for the average smartwatch user, battery anxiety is real.

Which Gives More Meaningful Data, a Smart Ring or a Smartwatch?

Smart Rings:

Smart Rings excel at approaching your whole body. They are so amazing at telling you if you are getting sick or if you need a recovery day. They mainly focus on the internal state of your body.

Smart Watches:

Smart Watches also provide sleep and recovery data, but they are mainly about the external outputs, like how fast you ran. How heavy did you lift?

So, if your goal is to optimize your lifestyle and sleep, you need to choose a Smart Ring. Whereas, if your goal is to optimize your activity level or gym-training records, you need to choose a smartwatch.

Which Should You Choose: Smart Rings or Smartwatches?

  • Runners: For this, you need to stick to the smart watch because it will provide you with real-time GPS and also give you the correct calculated data right on your wrist.
  • Gym Addicts: Surprisingly, a smart watch or a simple strap like WHOOP is often better. Rings get scratched on barbells and can be uncomfortable during heavy workouts.
  • Anti-Screen Person: For this, Smart Rings are perfect. It gives you consistent data without constant notifications, buzzing and even the distraction of the screen.

Using both a Smart Watch and a Smart Ring can be expensive, but it will cover everything. Many people are doing both, wearing a smart ring 24/7 for health baselines, while a smartwatch only for workouts and activity tracking.
