Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 Review: Samsung’s Premium Smartwatch Gets More Serious About Fitness

I’ve always found it a little funny how quickly a smartwatch can become part of your routine. You put it on in the morning to check a notification, glance at your steps a few hours later and somehow end up checking your sleep, heart rate, workout and recovery before the day is over.

But there is a point where you start expecting more from the watch on your wrist. You want something that can keep up when the day moves from work to a workout or from the city to a trail without feeling like it was built for just one of them. That is the idea behind Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.

It is Samsung’s attempt to push the Galaxy Watch beyond the usual smartwatch role and into the world of serious outdoor and fitness watches. And that makes the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 review an interesting one: can Samsung really balance everyday smartwatch convenience with the demands of people who take their fitness and outdoor adventures seriously? Let’s take a closer look.

What Is Galaxy Watch Ultra 2?

The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is Samsung’s definitive answer to the premium outdoor smartwatch category. It sits at the absolute top of Samsung’s wearable lineup, positioned significantly above the standard Galaxy Watch models. While the standard series is meant for casual, everyday activity tracking and notifications, the Ultra 2 is built for a much more demanding demographic.

While there are many features that set apart the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 from the regular Galaxy watch, the most obvious of them all is its endurance and sturdiness. Samsung has catered to those consumers who want something more durable and enduring but do not wish to leave the Wear OS application environment for another specialized, screenless model of outdoor watches. Samsung has found a way of combining convenience and sturdiness to satisfy the needs of consumers better. If you are searching for a device that can easily shift from a corporate office to a trail run, this is the device for you.

Design and Comfort

The moment I put the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 on my wrist, the toughness of the design was evident, even if it was unexpectedly elegant. Samsung maintained the distinctive cushion-like titanium body but reduced the size of the case by making it only 10.7mm in thickness and 61.5 grams in weight. As someone who really dislikes chunky smartwatches that catch in my jacket sleeves, I could not believe that Samsung managed to make such a reduction and include an 800mAh battery.

Not only does it have an eye-catching design, but it is also engineered to withstand severe abuse. Its 10ATM water resistance is backed by an IP69K rating, meaning that it is fully dust-proof and able to endure even the high-pressure sprays of water. Being fully compliant with the military standard MIL-STD-810H and certified EN13319, it becomes a true diving tool capable of reaching 40 meters down. To add another layer of safety when hiking on the trail, I decided to test its 86-decibel safety siren by pressing the customizable Quick Button, which unleashed a piercing alarm designed to be heard up to 180 meters away.

The upgraded 1.52-inch Super AMOLED display is another massive highlight of the design. Being able to emit 5,000 nits of peak brightness, it stayed sharp even when I was checking my route at noon, despite being exposed to the intense sunlight. The screen is protected by tough Sapphire Crystal glass, which easily resisted scratches from any rocks I might have touched while exploring. Although the touch screen responds to my touches well, the most convenient means of navigation for me is the orange Quick Button on the side of the device.

Though such technical specifications are present, comfort is not compromised. With the help of the lug system, I was able to put on the new Marine Band, which has an Air Pocket lining meant to facilitate quick drying of water. Even in my most strenuous sweaty workouts, the band did not feel sticky or absorb sweat. It was so comfortable that I wore it all night while sleeping.

Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 Health Features

BioActive Sensor & Heart Rate Tracking

The core of my health monitoring every day is the advanced BioActive Sensor developed by Samsung. It includes the optical bio-signal sensor, electrical heart signal sensor and bioelectrical impedance analysis. It became evident that all of them continuously monitor my heart rate in the background. The watch analyzed not just my metrics but identified my normal range based on the data collected. I felt more comfortable since any abnormality of the heart rate was detected and reported to me.

ECG & Heart Health

For deeper understanding of the cardiovascular system, I greatly appreciated having a dependable wrist monitor always at hand. I made good use of the ECG feature to see if I had any signs of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). On the other hand, the continuous tracking would give notifications on any Irregular Heart Rhythm (IHRN), in case of any abnormalities. I also monitored the Heart Health Score, which was determined by my weekly patterns in terms of my sleep, activity and body mass index (BMI). It became very convenient for me to know how I could improve my habits, without any need of having a medical background.

Sleep Tracking & Sleep Apnea

The one thing I realized very quickly was that you simply cannot function without recovery and the amount of sleep the watch analyzes is impressively detailed. Right from the get go, I started reviewing my REM, Deep and Light sleep data, along with continuous SpO2 measurements and snore detection data each morning. One of the most significant advancements I was looking forward to trying out was the FDA-cleared Sleep Apnea detection feature that could analyze nightly oxygen saturation drops, thus indicating moderate or severe sleep apnea. My data overnight were analyzed by Samsung Health and turned into personalized Sleep Coaching, which helped me change my habits at night to have sufficient rest the next day.

Blood Pressure & Body Composition

In addition to standard measurements, the watch goes further in terms of health indicators, providing measurements of blood pressure and body composition. Two fingers were put on the buttons on the side of the watch and with its help, Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) determined the percentage of my skeletal muscle mass and body fat. In order to measure blood pressure, the watch first needed to be calibrated with the help of a conventional medical blood pressure device. However, after calibration, all that was required to do was wear the watch at night and receive the results upon waking up.

Energy Score & Vitals

The Energy Score was something that I found extremely interesting in how Samsung was making use of Galaxy AI to make my health data work for me. It would give me an idea of my readiness each morning based on the data collected about my activities, sleep and HRV from the day before. If the score was low, the watch told me to take it easy and not train that day, thus saving me from overtraining several times. On top of this, the Vitals feature provided me with an intuitive view of my preventative data, such as Health Score, Daily Cardio Load and Fitness Index.

Stress & Cycle Tracking

Mental and hormonal health are integrated seamlessly into the daily tracking experience. The watch continuously monitored my stress levels through heart rate variability and sent me high-stress alerts during hectic work hours, prompting me to engage in guided breathing exercises to bring my nervous system back to baseline. For female users, the skin temperature sensor works overnight to provide precise, retrospective menstrual-cycle tracking, helping predict future windows and integrating that data into the overall readiness assessment.

Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 Fitness Features

Running & Running Coach

As an avid runner, I appreciated how the watch exceeded the usual capabilities of recording the distance and pace of my runs. Not only did it allow me to record more complicated metrics such as asymmetry, ground contact time and vertical oscillation, but it helped me improve my technique and avoid injuries. The Running Coach feature served as a personal pacer, providing me with customized training plans based on my current VO2 Max level. In fact, my watch automatically determined 5 heart-rate zones according to the VO2 Max results. I felt a quick vibration on my wrist letting me know exactly when I needed to push harder to hit my aerobic threshold or slow down to stay in a recovery zone.

Trail Running & Outdoor Tracking

As soon as I took the path off paved roads for my weekends hiking, the tracking performance out there was very impressive. Using the Trail Run profile and loading my GPX routes straight to my watch enabled me to follow turn-by-turn directions on my hike easily. With the help of dual-frequency GPS L1+L5, the route plotting accuracy was very high regardless of whether I had thick tree cover or uphill paths ahead. It actively tracked my elevation gain and provided helpful climb guidance, ensuring I knew exactly what kind of vertical challenge was waiting for me ahead.

Cycling & Personalized FTP

As far as my cycling workouts are concerned, I noticed an enormous improvement in the form of built-in Bluetooth connectivity that supports third-party power meters, speed sensors and cadence sensors. With the help of a power meter, I was able to use the watch’s Galaxy AI technology to automatically determine my FTP within 10 minutes of cycling, thus allowing me to measure my training intensity without having to mount my phone on the handlebars of my bicycle.

Daily Cardio Load & Fitness Index

I used the Daily Cardio Load as my main tool to avoid overtraining. The Daily Cardio Load measure measured the intensity of my workouts and took note of any activity that made me work out at zone 3 or higher on the heart rate zone chart. It gave me a very clear picture of how much physical effort I was exerting relative to how much recovery I was getting. This information was then incorporated in my Fitness Index score, which was an index that rated my VO2 Max, body composition, resting heart rate and steps as measures of my overall fitness levels.

Swimming & Diving

This durable titanium material is not just about style, the watch is an internationally certified diving instrument EN13319. Whether I did laps in a nearby pool or dove into the open water, the device would automatically record the depth of my dives, their length and the temperature of the water up to 40 meters deep. When it came to lap swimming, I was surprised to see that the watch could correctly analyze my stroke technique and calculate the SWOLF score.

Workout Tracking & Fall Detection

Being capable of supporting more than 100 types of workouts, the watch was able to detect and monitor my activities without pressing the button on my own. During my trainings, the dual frequency GPS was perfectly tracking my route. Most importantly, the watch has the advanced security system which provided me with great confidence. In case of sensing an unexpected strong impact with the help of its accelerometer and gyroscope, the Fall Detection would automatically alert if I needed any help. If I did not respond, then the watch would send a signal via LTE to my emergency contacts along with my GPS coordinates.

Battery Life: Has Samsung Fixed the Biggest Weakness?

The battery has always been a critical weakness for a full-fledged smartwatch and as someone who dislikes being plugged into a power source, this was my primary concern. But I can proudly assert that the battery life of the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 has made huge strides. And most of it can be attributed to its enormous 800 mAh battery, the largest battery ever placed in a Samsung watch, along with an extremely efficient 3nm processor.

While analyzing the specifications of the device, one should admit that the numbers really amaze. According to the information provided by Samsung, the battery will last up to 80 hours without the Always On Display, whereas 60 hours of work is quite impressive even with the always on mode turned on. In case the user prefers going totally off the grid, the watch provides a regular Power Saving mode that enables the battery to work for up to 100 hours. In addition, for athletes, there is an Exercise Power Saving mode that works for up to 48 hours non-stop.

In terms of my own personal experiences, all of these specifications have proven themselves accurate. Despite the frequent use of the phone, whether through GPS, Spotify or notifications, this does allow for a real experience of multiple days before needing to recharge the phone. I myself even had the opportunity to prove this when I went out camping for the weekend, returning Sunday night without needing my charger.

However, once you succeed in getting it drained, the watch offers extremely rapid wireless charging. It turned out that if I dropped it onto the charger right before taking a shower, it would be charged at around 40% within 30 minutes. Although the battery life is not even close to the multi-week battery life of some Garmin models, it completely changes the concept of using Wear OS-based smartwatches. Now, you don’t need to worry about charging your watch each day.

Samsung Health and Galaxy AI: The Software Advantage

The hardware is just half of the job, the software makes it or breaks it in terms of what the device is worth. On the new Wear OS 7 with Samsung One UI Watch 9 on top, I found the software side to be extremely fluid. Swipe through tiles and load fitness apps without experiencing any frustrating lag that was experienced in older versions of smartwatches.

The ability of the device to integrate with the Samsung Health platform is where it excels. All your metrics are synchronized to your phone and you get a complete overview of your physical state in a clear dashboard format. The thing that makes the watch superior to other brands is the emphasis that Samsung is putting on their Galaxy AI capabilities. It does not just give you unprocessed data to interpret on your own, it analyzes your sleeping patterns, activity and heart rate variability.

Energy Score and Wellness Tips

As soon as I woke up each morning, I would look at my Energy Score. Galaxy AI is used here to measure the physical state you are in based on data collected about your activity the previous day, your sleep time and heart rate variability during that time. Essentially, this means that complicated biometric data is summarized into one figure, which shows exactly what impact your habits have on your recovery. If the energy score was high, I could be sure that I was ready to hit the gym for a tough workout, but if not, then I was advised to take a rest. In addition to that, AI provides daily Wellness Tips. These aren’t generic fitness quotes, they are highly actionable, personalized suggestions tailored to your specific needs, like offering feedback on how to fix a fragmented sleep cycle or adjusting your workout intensity based on your recent performance.

Smart Communication on the Go

The Galaxy AI integration goes well beyond just health tracking, it fundamentally changes how you interact with the watch. Trying to type a long text message on a tiny screen has always been annoying, but Samsung fixed this with AI-powered Suggested Replies. When I received a text message, the AI would actively analyze the context of the entire conversation and generate surprisingly natural, nuanced responses that I could send with a single tap.

Furthermore, as someone who frequently takes voice notes while hiking or walking, the Voice Recorder app felt like a superpower. Using Galaxy AI, the watch can record your speech, automatically transcribe it into text and even generate a neat summary of your thoughts. It is this seamless blend of deep health analytics and genuinely smart daily assistance that makes the software on the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 feel like a true advantage.

Who Should Buy Galaxy Watch Ultra 2?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is for:

  • Samsung Galaxy owners looking for a high-end smartwatch that integrates seamlessly with the Galaxy lineup.
  • Sports and outdoors people seeking robust tracking without compromising on applications, 4G calling, notifications and other smartwatch functionalities.
  • Users looking for one watch to do all things, from exercising to hiking, work, traveling and other activities.
  • People who are fashion-conscious and require a premium and robust-looking watch but can also be used with formal wear.

Who Should Avoid Galaxy Watch Ultra 2?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is not for:

  • The watch is specifically designed for Android and Galaxy phones.
  • Endurance athletes that require more sophisticated tracking capabilities and increased battery life.
  • Individuals with small wrists who might not be comfortable wearing the larger 47mm size.
  • Those with less money to spend and don’t require all the outdoor and fitness smartwatch features of the Ultra 2.

Wrap Up

The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 feels like Samsung finally getting serious about the idea of an all-round outdoor smartwatch. It has the ruggedness and fitness tools to follow you on tougher adventures, while still keeping the everyday smartwatch features that make it useful at work, at home and everywhere in between.

It is not the obvious choice for everyone, especially if battery life or deep sports analytics comes first. But for Android users who want a premium watch that can handle both everyday life and outdoor fitness, the Ultra 2 makes a pretty convincing case.
