WHOOP MG Review: Advanced Health Tracking with ECG and AI Insights

A few months ago, I was sitting at my desk, staring at my old fitness tracker and realised I knew exactly how many steps I’d taken, but I had no real insight into how my body was actually feeling or recovering. I’m a bit of a data nerd, especially when it comes to wearable tech and I’d been hearing whispers about a new, high-end version of the WHOOP called the WHOOP MG.

When it finally arrived, I’ll admit, I was curious to see what made it the top-tier WHOOP. After reviewing the WHOOP 5.0 I was also excited to note the differences between WHOOP MG vs WHOOP 5.0. But after wearing it 24/7 through intense gym sessions, stressful deadlines and a few late nights, I’ve realised that medical-grade comes with a very specific set of rules and a pretty hefty price tag.

In this WHOOP MG review, I’m going to break down my personal experience with the device, the reality of its health features and whether the WHOOP Life subscription is a smart investment or just a fancy expense.

WHOOP MG Overview

The WHOOP MG is the premium tier of the WHOOP ecosystem, launched alongside the WHOOP 5.0. While the core 5.0 focuses on fitness and strain, the MG (Medical-Grade) version is designed for those who want to bridge the gap between a fitness tracker and a clinical health monitor.

It’s a screenless, distraction-free wearable that lives on your wrist, bicep or even in your clothes via WHOOP Body apparel. It doesn’t beep, it doesn’t vibrate for texts and it doesn’t tell the time. Its only job is to collect 100,000 data points every day to tell you exactly how your body is performing.

We can think of the WHOOP 5.0 as the Pro model and the MG as the Ultra. The hardware looks almost identical, but the MG includes specialised ECG hardware built into the sensor housing and a unique SuperKnit Luxe band with conductive indents that allow for medical-grade readings.

Unlike a Garmin or an Apple Watch, where you buy the device and own it, WHOOP is a membership-only service. You aren’t just buying a band, you are subscribing to a personalised health coach. The MG requires the WHOOP Life plan, which is the most expensive tier they offer.

Design and Comfort

One thing I’ve always loved about the WHOOP system is the comfort. Because there’s no bulky glass screen, the MG is incredibly light.

The WHOOP MG features the new SuperKnit Luxe strap and let me tell you, it’s a massive step up from the standard bands. It’s incredibly soft, crafted from a premium micro-filament yarn that feels more like a luxury fabric than a fitness tool. What really surprised me was the dry time. I usually hate the feeling of a damp band against my wrist after a shower, but this one dries surprisingly fast.

Technically, the WHOOP MG sensor is about 7% smaller than the previous 4.0, which sounds small but makes a huge difference when you’re sleeping. It measures roughly 34.7 mm x 24 mm x 10.6 mm and weighs in at a feather-light 27.3 grams. Because there’s no glass screen, I never worry about scratching it against a kettlebell or a doorframe during a heavy set. It’s so light that I often forget I’m wearing it, which is essential for something you are supposed to wear 24/7 to get accurate data.

I’ll be honest: at first, the lack of a screen was annoying. I kept looking at my bare wrist to check the time, like a phantom limb sensation. But after a week, it felt liberating. I wasn’t constantly checking my heart rate mid-run or getting distracted by a ‘Stand up!’ notification or buzzing emails.

This distraction-free design is intentional. The WHOOP MG doesn’t have a single button, light or speaker on the device itself. All that tech is tucked inside a matte black housing with brushed titanium detailing that is IP68 rated, meaning it’s dust-tight and waterproof up to 10 meters. It stays out of your way and lets you stay present in your life until you decide to check the app for the deep dive.

If you don’t like to put smart watches or smart bands on your wrist, then the MG is fully compatible with WHOOP Body apparel. You can pop the sensor out and slide it into Any-Wear pods in boxers, sports bras or bicep sleeves. 

However, a quick pro tip from my experience: if you want to use the medical-grade ECG features, you must wear it on your wrist with an MG-specific band. The Luxe bands include conductive indents and a specialised clasp that the sensor needs to talk to your skin for those heart readings.

Health Features: What Makes the WHOOP MG Different

This is where the WHOOP MG earns its name. It’s the Heart Screener that separates this from fitness trackers like Fitbit.

The WHOOP MG allows you to take an on-demand ECG (Electrocardiogram) right from your wrist. I found this incredibly helpful during a week when I was over-caffeinated and felt my heart racing, being able to run a quick check settled my nerves instantly. You simply find the feature in the app, place two fingers on the metal indents on the side of the tracker and wait 30 seconds.

  • The Reality: It generates a high-fidelity PDF that you can actually email to your cardiologist. It’s FDA-cleared for detecting signs of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib).
  • The Catch: It only works if you are using the specific MG-conductive straps. If you swap to a standard WHOOP 4.0 or 5.0 strap, the electrical circuit can’t complete and this feature disappears.

Blood Pressure Insights

This is the big one that finally made it into a wearable. The WHOOP MG provides daily estimates of your systolic and diastolic ranges while you sleep. I’ve been tracking how my late-night salty snacks actually spike my morning readings, it’s eye-opening.

It uses patent-pending optical sensors to track the pressure wave in your blood 26 times per second.

Limitation: It requires a cuff calibration. You can’t just put it on and know your blood pressure, you need to calibrate it using a traditional medical cuff. This involves taking three manual readings from a real cuff when you start and ideally every 30 days. 

It’s great for tracking trends over time, but it’s still an assistant, not a replacement for a doctor’s visit.

AFib and Irregular Rhythm Notifications

Beyond the manual ECG, the WHOOP MG is designed to monitor for Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) and irregular heart rhythms (IHRN) in the background while you rest. For anyone with a family history of heart issues, this passive watching is a huge relief. If the sensor detects a rhythm that doesn’t look right, you get a push notification to run a full ECG.

Healthspan and WHOOP Age

This is a newer feature that I’ve become slightly obsessed with. By analysing nine different biomarkers, including your HRV as well as resting heart rate, the WHOOP MG calculates your WHOOP Age.

The app tells me if I’m aging faster or slower than my actual birth year. It’s a bit of a wake-up call when you see your biological age climb after a weekend of poor sleep. It also tracks your Pace of Aging, giving you a score on how well you’re preserving your health goals for the long haul.

Advanced Labs

The WHOOP MG experience also comes with Advanced Labs integration. If you get blood work done at a local clinic, you can actually sync those results (like Vitamin D, Cortisol or Cholesterol levels) directly into the WHOOP app.

Seeing my low Vitamin D levels side-by-side with my Recovery scores helped me realize why I was feeling sluggish in the winter. It turns your wearable data from how I feel today into how I am built internally.

Women’s Hormonal Insights

For female users, the WHOOP MG offers an expanded version of Menstrual Cycle and Pregnancy Insights. It doesn’t just track dates, it maps how your hormonal shifts affect your HRV and sleep temperature. 

I’ve seen it suggest earlier bedtimes during specific phases because the data shows my body needs more recovery during those times. It makes the Readiness score feel much more accurate and personal.

Fitness and Recovery Tracking

Even though the WHOOP MG adds new health features, it still sticks to the basics that WHOOP is known for,  helping you understand your workouts, recovery, sleep and daily strain.

Daily Strain

Most trackers count steps, but WHOP measures Strain. This is a score from 0 to 21 that quantifies the cardiovascular and muscular load you put on your body.

I’ve noticed that a high-stress presentation at work can spike my strain just as much as a 3-mile run. It’s a holistic look at stress, both mental and physical.

One of my favourite updates is that the WHOOP MG (and 5.0) now automatically estimates muscular strain. If I’m doing heavy squats, the device uses its gyroscope and accelerometer to understand the effective mass I’m moving, giving me credit for the hard work my muscles are doing, not just my heart rate.

Recovery

Recovery is the heart of the WHOOP experience. Every morning, you get a score of Green, Yellow or Red, which is calculated using your Heart Rate Variability (HRV), resting heart rate and respiratory rate.

If I wake up in the Red (below 33%), I know it’s a day for a long walk or a nap, not a personal record in the gym. It has completely changed how I listen to my body, I no longer feel guilty for taking a rest day because the data proves I actually need it.

Sleep Tracking

In my experience, WHOOP is still the gold standard for sleep. It breaks your night down into Light, REM and Deep sleep.

The app tells you exactly how much sleep you need based on the previous day’s strain. If I had a 15.0 strain day, WHOOP might tell me I need 8 hours and 45 minutes to be 100% recovered. It even accounts for Sleep Debt, the cumulative sleep you’ve missed over the week.

Strength Trainer

For the lifters out there, the Strength Trainer is a game-changer. When I hit the weights, I can log my specific sets, reps and weights in real-time. The WHOOP MG then calculates the specific load on my musculoskeletal system. 

It’s the first time I’ve felt like a wearable actually understood the difference between a 45-minute jog and a 45-minute heavy lifting session.

Stress Monitor

The MG features a real-time Stress Monitor that measures my nervous system’s state on a scale of 0 to 3.

I’ve started using the Breathwork feature built into the app whenever I see my stress climbing into the High Zone during a hectic afternoon. The app actually guides you through a physiological sigh or box breathing to bring your heart rate back down and you can see the stress score drop in real-time. It’s like having a biofeedback machine on your wrist.

It also has the WHOOP Coach, which is an AI that analyses your specific data to answer questions. I’ve asked it things like, “Why was my recovery so low today?” and it pointed out that my skin temperature was higher than usual, suggesting I might be fighting off a cold before I even felt the symptoms. 

App Experience and Insights

The WHOOP app is where the magic happens. It’s not just a list of numbers, it’s a living AI Coach that actually remembers your goals. The dashboard is impeccably clean, prioritising three core dials: Sleep, Recovery and Strain

When I open the app in the morning, I’m greeted by the Daily Outlook, a personalised summary that tells me exactly how to handle my day. If my recovery is low, the coach might nudge me, saying, “your HRV is down 10% because you logged a late-night meal in your journal”. This typically leads to a 15% drop in my recovery and connects the dots between my choices and my biology in a way that feels genuinely human.

Beyond the daily stats, the app experience has expanded into a full Health Operating System. I’ve spent a lot of time in the Health Monitor section, which acts as a real-time dashboard for my vitals, like skin temperature, blood oxygen (SpO2) and resting heart rate, alerting me if anything drifts from my personal baseline. 

The WHOOP Journal is now more powerful than ever, allowing me to track over 300 behaviours, from caffeine intake to blue-light blocking and then showing me a Monthly Performance Profile that proves which habits are actually moving the needle. 

It even integrates with Advanced Labs, meaning I can upload my blood work results to see how my iron or Vitamin D levels are impacting my sleep and strain tolerance over time.

Battery Life and Charging

The battery life on the WHOOP MG is massive. I’m getting a solid 14 days on a single charge.

You know what the best part is? The continuous charging system. You have a little PowerPack that you slide onto the band while you’re wearing it. It’s waterproof with an IP68 rating, so I’ve actually showered with the charger on. 

You never have to take the device off your wrist, which means zero gaps in your data.

Subscription Model and Pricing

I’ve had to be really calculative about the cost because the WHOOP MG isn’t a one-time ‘buy it and keep it’ kind of gadget, it demands commitment. To actually use it, I have to sign up for the WHOOP Life plan, which costs me $359 every year. That first year feels okay because I get the MG sensor and a nice Luxe band included, but every year after that is another $359 just to keep the app working. 

It basically feels like paying for a second membership at a bougie gym in Beverly Hills. The toughest part for me is knowing that if I ever stop paying the subscription, this sleek piece of tech basically becomes an expensive paperweight. 

For me, the deep health insights make it worth the investment, but I can totally see how that forever fee would be a dealbreaker if you’re watching your monthly budget.

Accuracy and Reliability

In my testing, the HRV and sleep tracking were spot on. Studies also compare the WHOOP band to a chest strap, revealing that the heart rate during running was usually within 1-2 beats per minute, which is impressive for an optical sensor. However, it’s not perfect. 

Like all wrist-based wearables, grip tension during heavy lifting or CrossFit can occasionally mess with the sensors. If you’re a serious lifter, I highly recommend picking up the bicep band, it’s a total game-changer for accuracy during high-intensity movement.

What really sets the WHOOP MG apart, though, is its FDA-cleared Heart Screener. It’s cleared to take on-demand ECGs and send Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications (IHRN) if it spots signs of AFib while you sleep. The app even generates a high-fidelity PDF you can email straight to your doctor, which feels incredibly high-tech. 

The Blood Pressure Insights are equally fascinating but require a bit of homework. Since it uses optical sensors to estimate your trends rather than a physical cuff, you have to calibrate it. 

It’s important to remember that in early 2026, the FDA clarified that these are wellness tools, not diagnostic replacements. I treat my daily BP midpoint as a helpful health weather report to see how my stress and salt intake are tracking, rather than an absolute medical truth.
