People often ask me why my Oura Ring never fails to track nighttime data or how it always has enough charge to track all the features. It’s just that I have built a habit of charging my Oura Ring every fifth day so that it performs well.

Many Oura users, especially new ones, often wonder how to charge the ring and extend its battery life. The colors of Gen3’s charger can be confusing at first, and that’s exactly why I have decoded everything in this article.

How To Know When To Charge Your Oura Ring?

I used to keep an eye on the Oura app to check the Oura Ring battery health. When my Oura Ring battery is low (25%), Oura triggers a notification.

That’s it. The ring itself does not vibrate or flash a red light to indicate that the battery is drained.

Here is how you can turn on Oura Ring Notification for battery:

  1. Launch the Oura app and go to Menu.

So, there is no other way but to keep an eye on your device for Oura notifications or check the Oura app to find out when you need to charge the Oura Ring.

For me, I choose to charge my ring every five days. Because the average battery life of the Oura Gen3 is 7 days. However, I found the actual battery life is around six days (as per my usage). Hence, I chose the five-day mark to make sure that the ring should have enough charge to run all the features.

Also, Oura says to charge the ring at your leisure time. I found that the most convenient time to charge my Oura Ring is while I’m taking a bath. I usually remove the ring and put it on the charger before I hit the shower.

As a beginner, your first job is to find your ideal time gap to charge your Oura Ring so that it does not miss to record important data.

How To Charge Your Oura Ring?

Charging the Oura Ring is a relatively easy task. To charge the Oura Ring, you will need the charging dock and the USB charging cable that comes with the ring. Besides, you can charge a Gen2 ring with a Gen3 charger or charge a Gen3 ring with a Gen2 charger.

Also, whether you are charging the Gen2 or Gen3 ring using the Gen3 charger, in both cases, the Gen3 charger displays all lights, unlike the Gen2 charger, which blinks white light only.

Let’s follow the steps to charge your Oura Ring:

1. Plug the USB cable into a power source like a laptop, a power brick, or a wall adapter, and then insert the other end into the charging dock.

2. Place the dock on a flat surface, then place the ring on the dock. The LED will start blinking a white light when your ring is charging.

3. When your Oura Ring is fully charged, the charger’s LED will turn green. Also, you will have a notification on your device that the ring is 100% charged.

Now, you can remove the ring from the dock and wait a few minutes before putting it back on the finger. Your ring may get a little hot while charging (especially, if charging for ~1hr).

When you place the ring on the charger, make sure that the white light is blinking. If not, or the LED blinks red light instead of white, it means the Oura Ring is not charging; there’s something wrong. Either the charger or the Oura ring being damaged.

How Often To Charge Oura Ring?

Oura Ring charge should remain for 7 days as officially claimed by Oura. However, I noticed that there are several features on Gen3, such as Workout Heart Rate, Explore content, or Blood Oxygen Sensing, that consume more battery life. The battery life and longevity depend on how often you are using these features.

As per my observation, when I’m using most of the high battery-consuming features (as mentioned above), my Oura Ring battery lasts only up to 5 days.

So, keep an eye on your feature usage and charge your Oura Ring when a minimum of 30% charge is remaining, or some features may stop working properly.

LED Color Reference For Oura Gen3 Charger

As you already know, the Gen3 charger comes with LED functionality. This is way better for understanding whether my ring is still charging or if the charge is completed. So, here is a quick pictorial guide elaborating on what the Oura Gen3 charger LED indicator means:

Is it Possible to Charge Oura Ring Without a Charger?

Theoretically, it is not possible to charge Oura Ring without a charger. The Oura Ring charger comes in specific sizes, with a specific voltage and amperage designed for the Oura battery. Using an alternate charger with a different voltage can damage the ring’s battery.

Besides, when I had a word with Oura, they said using a different charger would turn Oura Ring’s warranty void. If the ring is damaged because it was used on a different charger, then the company won’t exchange it.

Recently, I found that people are talking about using wireless chargers to charge the Oura Ring. This is a myth.

I also found that someone on Reddit claimed to charge his size-11 Oura ring with a size-7 charger just by placing it carefully on the charger (the crown of the ring should flush against the charging bump). I found it tricky and gave it a try.

Since I have two Oura Rings – a Gen2 ring (in size 12) and a Gen3 ring (in size 11), I tried this method. I placed my Gen2 (size 12) ring on the Gen3 (size 11) charger, and it worked!

If you have more than one Oura Rings, you can swap chargers in this way; but it is definitely not recommended by me. Loose fit will never continuously charge your ring and waste a lot of time.

Wrap Up

I’ve been using Oura Gen3 for almost a year without any charging or battery health issues. Some people might say that their ring’s charge is draining faster than expected, but I found that my Oura battery lasts almost five days even if I use all the features.

Charging Oura Ring is very simple, and I never felt the urge to use any other method but the original charger to charge my Oura Ring. I think all you need to do is pay attention to minute things like low battery notification, overcharging the ring, or exposing the ring to extreme temperatures to get the maximum of the Oura battery.
