A Complete Guide to Replacing Your Oura Ring

Within a year of buying my Oura Ring, I had to get it replaced. Why, you ask. It stopped charging. Every time I put it on charge, it didn’t budge. I thought it was a battery issue, but since Oura has specifically mentioned on their website that they don’t do replacements for “consumable parts, including batteries,” I contacted their customer support for troubleshooting.

My ring was well within the one-year warranty; however, after a few reboots, the Oura customer support and I came to a conclusion that it was a manufacturing issue and not a battery problem. Owing to which, they offered a replacement.

What is Oura’s Return Policy?

Oura offers a return/ exchange for a fully functional product for any reason within 30 days of receiving your Oura Ring. The shipping and handling charges, customs fees, and UK VAT are all non-refundable.

The return policy/warranty stands for in-store purchases made through a retailer or online. For purchases made through a retailer, I advise you to contact them directly.

The refunds are also made in the same currency as the original and reflect the current exchange rates. However, as per my experience, you must cancel your membership through the app or your Oura account on the web, or the autopay will keep deducting charges from your payment method.

Please note for another style/color or a different price range, the Oura Ring needs to be returned for a refund, and a fresh ring is to be ordered.

Oura has a self-service portal for returns and exchanges within the US, Canada, Germany, Finland, and the UK. These along with portals for other countries, have different links, which can be accessed via Oura’s official website under ‘Return Policy’.

All you need for the same is your order number and the email address you used to place that order. These can be found through ‘My Orders’ in your account or your invoice.

Oura offers one return/ exchange. Simply means, you can either exchange your ring once for a different size/color for the same price or return your ring for a refund and place a new order.

Steps to Follow Prior to Returning / Exchanging or Ordering a Replacement

Before you send out your Oura Ring for a return/exchange or order a replacement, make sure to:

  • Backup your data – Backing up your data will store it on your Oura cloud for you to have access to it even after you get a new ring. To perform a backup, simply head to the Oura app > Home tab > ☰ menu > Settings > Backup all data.

  • Once the backup is complete, place the ring on a flat surface

  • After the factory reset is complete, don’t move the ring from the flat surface for two minutes.
  • Head to your phone’s Bluetooth settings and remove the ring (“oura_A038xxx”) from the list of paired devices.

How to Return or Exchange my Oura Ring?

  1. Head to Oura’s Return or Exchange.
  2. Choose the link for your country of purchase.
  3. Enter your order number and email address.

You will receive an email confirming your return/exchange request.

Return or Exchange my Oura Ring bought through Best Buy

In case you purchased your Oura Ring via Best Buy, all cancellations and returns must be made through them. You are eligible for returns within 30 days of purchase from a Best Buy store; however, no exchanges are allowed. In case of an exchange, you must return your product for a refund and place a new order either via Best Buy or Oura’s official website.

What is Included in the Oura Ring’s Warranty?

If you incur any damages to your Oura Ring or its charger within a period of one year* starting from the date of purchase (i.e., the day you receive your product and not the day you place your order), Oura will repair, refund, or replace your product. What they don’t cover in their warranty is:

  • Lost or stolen products
  • Regular wear and tear of the products, such as dents or scratches
  • Consumable parts, including batteries

Now, why is there a difference in the warranty period covered by Oura in the US, Europe, and other countries?

Owing to the country you purchase your Oura Ring Gen3, the warranty period changes. The US offers a warranty of 1 year, while in Europe and most other countries, you get a warranty of 2 years, unless mentioned otherwise. Oura Gen2 still stands at a 2 year warranty, despite the country of purchase.

If you are facing a battery related issue like I did, I will suggest you contact their customer support once before you think it’s money down the drain. Many customers have reported that they were offered a replacement along with a lifetime subscription of their membership, despite outgrowing their warranties.

I feel there’s also a possibility that the batch of Oura Gen3 produced at the launch (during the Gen3 rollout delays) had some manufacturing defects which is why they are going against their stated policy and replacing rings owing to battery issues. So my suggestion would be that it doesn’t hurt to ask; you might just get lucky.

If, for any reason, you get a replacement ring, the warranty is as good as the original ring’s warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer. For instance, I got my ring replaced at the 7-month mark, so the replacement ring I got was covered under warranty for 5 months.

The ‘Extended Protection Plan’ by Oura

Additionally, I suggest you opt for their ‘extended protection plan,’ which will give you more bang for your buck. The additional warranty covers your product for longer than the original warranty for an additional $45 for 2 years and $60 for 3 years.

This can be added to your cart at the time of purchasing your Oura ring and cannot be added at a later date. A decision I regret and a suggestion I give all my friends and family now is to add the additional warranty at the time of purchase. Your Oura Ring, as well as the charger are included in the extended warranty.

How to Order a Replacement Oura Ring?

To initiate a replacement under warranty, submit a request via Oura’s official website. I attached pictures of the product to present the case better, along with the troubleshooting tips they recommended in my initial conversation. The Oura team will guide you post that.

Set up an Oura Replacement Ring

Once you receive the new ring, follow these steps to set it up-

1. Place the new ring on its charger.

3. Scroll down and select ‘Set up a new ring’.

4. Begin Setup > Continue.

You will set up the replacement ring as you had set up the original ring. If you had backed up the data prior, you would be able to get that loaded onto your new ring.

What I love about Oura is their impeccable customer service. They are so helpful and quick to respond. I strongly suggest you extend the warranty for 2 years for an additional $45 or $60 for 3 years. 

While Oura explicitly mentions on their website that they don’t cover the battery in their warranty, I recommend reaching out to their customer service because, in certain cases, depending on the nature of the issue, they do offer a replacement. 

Before you exchange/ return your Oura ring, make sure to back up your data. This will prevent your data from leaking, and you will still have access to it on your Oura cloud.
