No doubt this is the era of social media and TikTok remains highly influential even after the short ban on the app in the US. This leads to the spreading of information, correct and incorrect, like wildfire.
Amongst this incorrect information going viral are videos of the Apple Watch Ultra having hidden cameras, sending Apple Watch users into a frenzy.
Let me debunk this myth for you– the Apple Watch Ultra does not have any hidden cameras.
If you still have a doubt, read through iFixit’s teardown of the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The devices shown in these videos are counterfeit knock-offs of the Apple Watch Ultra. Any genuine Apple Watch bought off of the Apple website, the Apple Store, or Apple authorized resellers do not sell counterfeit or fake Apple Watches.
Tips to help you protect against counterfeit Apple Watches#
Here are a few things to keep in mind before buying an Apple Watch from anywhere except the Apple Stores:
- Many websites selling these fakes have listed Android as their operating system. Check and see if the watch’s operating system is watchOS, which is exclusive to Apple.
- The price could also be a dead giveaway since the Apple Watches rarely go on discount, and knock-offs are sold at a very low price point.
- Another red flag that helps you differentiate between a genuine Apple Watch and a fake one is the presence of the Google Play Store. Apple products use the App Store as their hub for downloading apps and games as a part of their operating system.
- Check the serial number of the Apple Watch from the list given on Apple’s website to check if it’s a genuine Apple Watch or a knock-off.
Wrap Up#
With the rise of counterfeit products in the market, it is very difficult to put an end to their production. However, by following the practices above, I’m sure we all will be saved against such malpractices. But again, I strongly recommend buying Apple products from either Apple Stores (online or brick-and-mortar) or authorized Apple resellers, in order to avoid any such potential scams. Instead, the Apple Watch already has plenty of useful features, including automatic sleep and nap tracking, as explained in our guide on how Apple Watch tracks naps. And who knows, maybe Apple will come out with a camera in their Apple Watches.
