Garmin Fenix 9 Review: The Ultimate Outdoor Watch for Serious Athletes?

Your morning run starts with good intentions. Twenty minutes later, you have taken a wrong turn, discovered a new trail and somehow turned a quick workout into a mini adventure. The only thing you don’t want to worry about now is your watch dying halfway through.

That’s where the Garmin Fenix 9 comes in. Built for people who take their fitness seriously (and occasionally get carried away with their weekend plans), it packs multi-band GPS, detailed training tools, built-in maps and impressive battery life into a rugged smartwatch.

But with a premium price tag and more fitness data than most of us can process before our morning coffee, is it really worth buying? In this Garmin Fenix 9 review, let’s look at what it offers, where it falls short and who will actually benefit from all those features.

What Is the Garmin Fenix 9?

To better understand the Garmin Fenix 9, look at where the watch fits in the overall wearables market. The Garmin Fenix 9 is not any old smartwatch, but a high end multi sport GPS watch specifically developed for hardcore athletes, outdoor enthusiasts and fitness fans. Whereas regular smartwatches tend to emphasize communication with your phone via texts and calls, the Fenix watches have always been more focused on survival, endurance and performance monitoring.

When examining the Garmin Fenix 9 specifications, it is evident that this gadget is intended to be used by individuals that consider fitness a way of life, rather than a mere hobby. The Fenix 9 is positioned as the ultimate top tier watch from Garmin and combines the highest level of performance in the areas of mapping, power efficiency and training data tracking. This watch will serve perfectly for training for a triathlon, hiking the Appalachian Trail and getting the best data collection during your regular workouts.

While other smartwatches need recharging every night, Garmin Fenix 9 was designed with longevity in mind. Instead of relying on third-party app stores, it focuses on reliability. This watch isn’t intended to serve your need to monitor social media activity and answer messages using a small keyboard. But if you need a device capable of monitoring a 100-mile ultra-marathon and still having enough power left to help you get home, then this is what you should choose.

Garmin Fenix 9 Design and Build Quality

From the very first time you open up your Garmin Fenix 9 package, you know that this watch was built to last. While I was using it for testing purposes, I found myself scratching it against brick and rock more often than I care to admit, but because of its durability, it never got a scratch.

For me personally, the perfect combination of the bezel and crystal glass was the one with the titanium bezel and the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The case itself is made out of a fibre-reinforced polymer and it is absolutely indestructible. Another surprising feature of this watch was its weight. Despite having such a big amount of technology in a 47mm version, the titanium case itself weighs only 52 grams. It has an acceptable thickness of about 13.8mm, which means that the watch will feel good on your wrist, but won’t be a burden while running for endurance. The thing is, that Garmin made this watch available in three different versions of the cases: small 43mm, medium 47mm and big 51mm cases.

The other notable improvement seen in the Garmin Fenix 9 is the amazing AMOLED display. In the past, Garmin used Memory In Pixel (MIP) display screens to preserve battery life. But thanks to the 1.3-inch AMOLED display screens in the Fenix 9 series, this watch not only looks amazing but is also clear, bright and easily readable even when used in direct and extremely bright sunlight. With a very responsive modern touchscreen, Garmin still kept their iconic 5-button design for navigation. This was extremely useful when my hands were sweaty or I was wearing thick winter gloves because I could navigate without any problem using these buttons. This button-based navigation is a hallmark of Garmin’s outdoor usability, proving that they prioritise function in extreme conditions over simple smartwatch aesthetics.

The amazing thing about this is that they are not ordinary push buttons. Rather, Garmin has made these buttons in a leak-proof inductive technology which ensures that there are no openings in the inner part of the case of the watch. This feature complements the new addition of a metal sensor guard which is very obvious in protecting the in-built microphone and the barometer from dust and debris. Due to all these technical features, the watch has more than the ordinary 10 ATM water resistant capability, as it is fully rated for diving at 40 meters deep with an EN13319 certification. As for me, when it came to using it in heavy rainfall or open water swimming, it worked seamlessly. In knowing that the watch has gone through rigorous tests according to U.S. military standards in terms of thermal, shock and water resistance, I felt very secure in taking it out of the way.

Garmin Fenix 9 Health Features

The Elevate Gen 5 Sensor and ECG Capabilities

All of this health tracking comes from the newest Elevate Gen 5 sensor developed by Garmin. Since it is now situated a little bit more apart from the skin due to the new design of the sensor, it gives me the most consistent and accurate heart rate tracking from a wrist wearable I have ever seen while running on a daily basis. But the main feature which impressed me the most is the built-in ECG app. It allows me to place my fingers on the metal bezel for 30 seconds and record the electrical impulses of my heart to detect the presence of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). Knowing that the clinical-grade feature is right at my wrist provides me with a lot of comfort since it shows that the device not only cares about my running but also about my overall medical baseline.

Body Battery and All-Day Stress Tracking

If there is one health attribute that I would have to select to observe the most, then it would certainly be the Body Battery provided by Garmin. While it is easy to blindly track my number of steps in a day, the Garmin Fenix 9 provides my body with an actual energy rating from 0 to 100. This is done quite automatically since the system analyzes how well I sleep, how variable my heart rate is and how active my body has been in the course of the day. For instance, I can see how quickly my Body Battery gets drained when I engage in a series of fun sports activities after having an exhausting day. In addition to this, the device provides me with all-day stress tracking that observes how stressed I am based on changes in my heart rate. Thus, when my stress level unexpectedly goes up due to my busy writing day, the watch suggests taking a breathing break.

Advanced Sleep Coach, Skin Temperature and HRV Status

Unlike most conventional smartwatches, the Fenix 9 does not limit itself to providing statistics on how many hours of sleep you had, rather, it offers valuable information on how much sleep you really need. The Sleep Coach technology used in this watch makes me glad, as it is not based on a standardized number of eight hours. Instead, it changes my recommendations for nighttime rest depending on my age, current physical activity and my overall sleep debt acquired after several restless nights. Furthermore, a new version of the Elevate sensor provides tracking of the body temperature at night. I have found that this technology can be a great predictor of an approaching sickness. It works perfectly with the HRV (Heart Rate Variability) Status widget. It helps me know about the balance in my nervous system by calculating time intervals between my heartbeats while sleeping.

The Morning Report

All of the above health data finds its perfect home in one fantastic feature that is called Morning Report. Each morning, as soon as I wake up, I see a beautiful and comprehensible report about my night directly in front of my eyes on the screen of my Garmin Fenix 9 smartwatch. Before I leave the bed, I can easily go through my Sleep Score, my Body Battery level, my Nightly HRV report and even the weather forecast for the day ahead. It starts my day in a very positive and informed way without any need to take my smartphone out of the pocket at all.

Garmin Fenix 9 Fitness and Training Features

When it comes to the fitness tracker capability of the Garmin Fenix 9, one can say for sure that here is where this watch excels. Being an active post-exercise analysis person, I was delighted by the capabilities of training on the watch. The high accuracy of the Elevate Gen 5 optical heart rate sensor together with the ECG functionality allows Garmin Fenix 9 to show not only that you have been training but also what effects it had on your body and when you will be ready to do the next training session.

Advanced Running Metrics and Wrist-Based Power

All of the running data provided in my morning runs has been exceptionally precise. The watch monitors everything from your stride length and vertical displacement to your ground contact time, all of which is being calculated without having to wear an extra chest strap to do so. However, the thing that has become my favorite feature so far has been the running power calculation function available on the wrist. By monitoring various parameters such as your current pace, grade of the terrain and even wind condition, the Garmin Fenix 9 calculates your effort in real-time as watts of power. Therefore, when I had to run against the wind or uphill, I knew how much effort I should put in instead of exhausting myself based on pace alone.

Seamless Cycling Integration and Multisport Tracking

For athletes such as a cyclist or a triathlete, the watch simply becomes the ultimate center that covers all aspects of your training program. The watch connects perfectly through Bluetooth and ANT+ to third-party power meters and smart trainers, logging all the details of your workout ride. When I felt the need to change my training program and try a multisport event, the automatic switch became sheer magic to me. The watch automatically recognized when I switched to swimming and later to cycling, recording my perfect split timings with ease without pressing any buttons while gasping for air.

Training Readiness, Recovery Insights and New Scores

What I appreciate most each day is the Training Readiness score. Each morning when I get out of bed, the Garmin Fenix 9 calculates my sleep efficiency, current training load, night-time HRV and recovery time to give me an easily understood score between 0-100. The score will help me know if I need to challenge myself in order to achieve a new personal record or if I need to take a much-needed break from training.

Additionally, the fantastic long-term trackers provided by Garmin include the Endurance Score and Hill Score. The Endurance Score assesses my training background and my VO2 max in order to measure how good I am at performing sustained efforts and the Hill Score measures my running abilities when going up a hill. By integrating these precise estimations into a single story, the ecosystem of the Garmin Fenix 9 is completely unique. It eliminates all the guessing involved in working out and helps me train effectively.

GPS and Outdoor Features

This is where you will see the Garmin Fenix 9 shine when going off the beaten track. If you are a hiker, explorer or trail runner, then you will find the navigation functionality of the device extremely useful. In particular, I purposely used the device in deep forest areas and narrow gorges where natural barriers tend to obstruct the reception of regular GPS signals. As a result, the GPS functionality of the device, with its multi-band dual frequency GPS that utilizes both L1 and L5 satellite signals, perfectly tracked my path. The reason why this works even better is the SatIQ technology by Garmin. It automatically changes GPS settings in the background and ensures me with excellent positioning accuracy in challenging conditions and optimization of power consumption when I am outdoors. Overall, the GPS of the Garmin Fenix 9 is the most accurate one I have ever tested before.

The onboard maps is one of the best features that made me avoid getting lost when navigating my way through an unknown trail. The Fenix 9 already comes equipped with full-color TopoActive maps and allows me to view terrain contours and elevation maps right on my wrist. During a recent hike, I appreciated how responsive the touchscreen was, making it easy for me to pan and zoom the map. One feature that I loved using is the round-trip routing. Anytime that I find myself in a new city and all I need is to get a quick workout done, I enter how far I plan to run and instantly receive a few loops that would bring me back to where I started. In addition, I loved the ability to see how far the next fork is along the route, which helped me to avoid being lost.

In addition to the mapping, the watch contains important technical hardware that include an in-built altimeter for measuring altitude, a barometer for monitoring any abrupt changes in the weather and a 3-axis electronic compass. In situations where one is climbing steep slopes, ClimbPro is of much use as it gives a breakdown of the climbs to be made along the way. The watch tells you the gradient, distance and altitude of the climb that still remains to be done, allowing me to regulate my effort. Such advanced tracking outdoors is complimented with the watch’s safety features such as incident detection and LiveTrack, through which family members can easily track my real-time location when I was out on solo adventures. For anyone who spends significant time in the wilderness, the Garmin outdoor smartwatch experience provides immense peace of mind.

Garmin Fenix 9 Battery Life

Let’s talk about the biggest reason athletes abandon traditional smartwatches: battery anxiety. In my Garmin Fenix 9 review testing, the battery life was the feature that consistently blew my mind. If you are used to charging your watch every single night, the Garmin Fenix 9 will change the way you live.

Depending on the size you choose, the Garmin Fenix 9 battery life is staggering. On the larger 51mm model, you can expect up to 29 days of battery life in smartwatch mode. If you strip it down to low-power battery saver mode, it can last over 40 days.

This endurance makes the Garmin Fenix 9 the ultimate companion for long adventures, ultra-marathons and multi-day camping trips where bringing a charger is not an option. When doing a direct comparison with smartwatches from other leading tech brands, the difference is night and day. You spend more time wearing the watch and gathering valuable health data and almost no time tethered to a wall outlet.

Smart Features and Garmin Connect Experience

Though the Garmin Fenix 9 is definitely more of a sport watch than anything else, it does provide a good package of useful smartwatch functions. The watch did not distract me in any way throughout all the time I used it and it even allows you to receive notifications on your wrist from your smartphone.

One thing that I used a lot was the offline music facility. Playlists can be synchronized right off Spotify, Amazon Music or Deezer via Wi-Fi connection. Carrying the watch alone with my Bluetooth headphones and without my phone was a huge relief.

All the information gathered by the watch is automatically imported to the Garmin Connect application. Garmin Connect remains one of the most effective health-related applications on the market, providing health insights in depth without requiring any additional monthly payment/Subscription. It is possible to explore all details about your sleep, stress and training progress using highly visualized information in the application. Nevertheless, it is necessary to say that Garmin values sports data more than the entire app ecosystem. There will be no opportunity to access the huge number of third-party applications or to call for a taxi through the watch.

Garmin Fenix 9 vs Apple Watch Ultra

Of course, the first and foremost thing that comes into any shopper’s mind while making the purchase at this price range would be to find out how the Garmin Fenix 9 measures up against its greatest competition. While comparing the Garmin Fenix 9 and Apple Watch Ultra, the final decision would depend on your needs.

If you are seeking premium smartwatch options, which perform exceedingly well as an extension of your iPhone, the Apple Watch Ultra is absolutely amazing. It provides an impeccable app ecosystem, calling facility from your wrist, typing text messages using a full keyboard and seamless integration with smart home devices. The downside is that the Apple Watch Ultra can last up to only a few days.

However, the Garmin Fenix 9 completely outperforms the Apple Watch Ultra in terms of battery performance, training capabilities and outdoor usage. Unlike the Apple Watch Ultra, the Garmin Fenix 9 provides weeks of battery performance rather than days. In addition, the Garmin Fenix 9 offers much more advanced training features and mapping features as a default one. The Apple Watch Ultra is just an amazing smartwatch that can endure an adventure, while the Garmin Fenix 9 is an amazing device for adventures which has some smartwatch features. There is no general winner here it totally depends on your preferences either smartwatch or sports watch.

The Garmin Fenix 9 is built for people who want more from a smartwatch than step counts and phone notifications. With advanced training tools, built-in maps, rugged construction and impressive battery life, it makes a strong case for runners and outdoor enthusiasts. However, its premium price and bulky design may not suit everyone. If fitness tracking and outdoor adventures are your priorities, the Garmin Fenix 9 is worth considering. Just make sure you need all those features before spending the money.
