I consider myself to be the few people who had the privilege of getting the Evie Ring as soon as it was launched because ever since then, it’s been out of stock. The ring is simply a piece of art; it’s ingenious how the ring works.
But, given that you may not get to try out the Evie Ring yourself for some time, let me give you a first-hand account of how it works. I can walk you through the functioning of the ring, which makes it truly smart. So, for all of this and more, keep scrolling through this article till the end!
How Does Evie Ring Collect Data?
On the surface, my Evie Ring looks like a comfortable piece of jewelry that I wear on my index finger. However, it is so much more than that.
On the outwards, my Evie Ring is smooth and shiny. But when I take it off, the three tiny sensor bumps present on the inside of the ring become visible.
Not to worry, those tiny sensors don’t dig into my fingers. The sensors have a smooth design and are made up of biocompatible materials. Those tiny little things work tirelessly to collect my health-related information when I have the ring on my finger. Here’s all the collect and how they work:
Heart Rate (Continuous)
The Evie Ring monitors my heart rate through a sensor called the photoplethysmography sensor (a.k.a. PPG sensor). This sensor is located on the inside of the ring and shines a lime green light through my finger to detect minute changes in blood volume caused by my heartbeat.
This allows the Evie Ring to track my heart rate in three different ways:
- My ring can take my heart rate every five minutes during waking hours or while I am sleeping.
- It can do so every minute for the time I have started a workout.
- Furthermore, with the help of the Spot Check mode, it can take my heart rate in real time for 40 seconds.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
The same PPG sensor also plays a role in calculating my HRV. For the uninformed, HRV reflects the variation in time between heartbeats. So, of course, the normal “HRV” rate looks different for each one of us.
Therefore, to assess my unique baseline HRV, Evie has to analyze my biometrics. After this, my HRV is estimated on the basis of the time intervals between the blood flow fluctuations detected by the PPG sensors.
Together, HRV and heart rate can provide valuable insights into my health that can help me understand when I am in a heightened state of stress and need to prioritize rest and recovery time.
Resting Heart Rate
The sensors present on my Evie Ring track changes in my blood flow, which reflects my heartbeat throughout the day. To have an estimate of my Resting Heart Rate (RHR), the sensors focus on the times I am still or have minimal movement, like at night.
My heart rate from these calm periods is then averaged to have an RHR. However, when giving me a number, my ring also keeps other things like my sex, where I am in my cycle, etc. Because these things have a direct impact on my RHR, and keeping them into consideration ensures that my results are more accurate and personalized.
Skin Temperature
My Evie Ring lets me see my average skin temperature variation from the previous night. It does so using the skin temperature sensors present on the ring. And this particular insight can be used to track several other health metrics.
However, at this time, my Evie Ring can’t make use of my skin temperature variation insight to estimate my ovulation period. Not to worry, though. This feature will be introduced in the future.
Menstrual Tracking
Since Evie is said to be a woman-centric ring, I know you’d expect it to truly shine in the cycle tracking area.
One would expect the ring to take skin temperature variation into account to share insight into the same or provide ovulation estimates. However, it is not so for now (Evie is working on it, though).
As of now, women like myself have to log in when their cycle starts manually, how heavy the menstrual flow is, and any PMS symptoms that we are experiencing.
With the help of the first date of my last period and my cycle length, Evie shows me a future estimation of my fertility window, ovulation date, and period— all in calendar format.
And guess what? Within a few months of doing so, the Evie Ring (app) started showing me insights into my fertility window and ovulation date! Furthermore, the companion Evie Ring app has also started making some recommendations depending on where I am in my cycle.
For example, the other day, I found out via the app that I usually get poor and restless sleep during my luteal phase and what I can possibly do to fix it.
Mood Journal
The Evie Ring app has a daily journal feature that helps me track my moods and energy levels in a way that doesn’t make the whole thing seem like a chore to me. This is what makes my Evie Ring different from other health trackers.
It doesn’t simply just provide me with a few words that I can use to describe my mood. It goes a step further and also gives me the option to rank my energy levels and mood on a scale from low to high.
SpO2 Tracking
My Evie Ring, just like most smart rings out there, allows me to check my SpO2 levels. It is a measure of the amount of oxygen present in my blood in terms of percentage. It does so using the inbuilt sensors present on the inside of the ring.
Apart from that, I can also choose to get my SpO2 reading via the Spot Check feature. It allows me to track my blood oxygen levels for 40 seconds in real-time.
For this, all I have to do is hold the ring between my thumb and index finger, with the sensors touching the inside pad of my index finger. Doing so gives me a measure of my SpO2 levels. This method is particularly handy when my hand is quite cold or swollen.
Activity & Workout Tracking
The Evie Ring uses a built-in 3D accelerometer to track my steps, distance traveled, active minutes, and the calories I have burned.
And well, even though the Evie Ring does an excellent job of tracking steps (the ring is actually better than my Apple Watch since the latter often undercounts the steps I walk; how rude), I have to manually start a workout activity via the app to let the Evie Ring know of the same.
Unlike some Smart Rings, the Evie Ring doesn’t always automatically log the changes. I have to manually let it know so that it can better track my activity, heart rate (consistently), calories burned, etc., during the workout.
However, Evie is really new in the market right now. So, one can expect this bit to evolve and change so that Evie picks up on changes in activity on its own.
Sleep Quality
Just like any other smart ring out there, one of the best features of my Evie Ring is its ability to track the quality of my sleep. It does so by monitoring my sleep patterns, sleeping respiration rate, and time spent in each sleep stage.
Although the Evie Ring hasn’t shared any information regarding how exactly it does that, it is possible that it relies on sensor data to monitor your sleep. For example, changes in heart rate variability measured using a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor could be an indicator of different sleep stages.
Respiration Rate
One of the many other things that the Evie Ring monitors is my respiration rate. It uses its tiny little sensors to establish my personal baseline for health (since everyone has a different baseline) and then goes on to take relevant measurements throughout the night.
The estimates of my respiration rate provide me with key insights into my other health-related data. For example, my lung health, circulation, etc.
How Does Evie Ring Process Data?
All of the data that my Evie Ring works tirelessly to collect gets converted into information that I can understand later. This is done by the Evie Ring app that I have installed on my iPhone.
When I open the app, instead of seeing something mechanical and boring, my eyes are pleased to see the aesthetic layout consisting of a soothing dark purple color. The fact that I like purple already makes everything better.
Evie App Menus
The app has four tabs at the bottom– Today, My Body, Sleep, and Journal. All the data that is collected is organized meaningfully in these four tabs.
If I want to have a quick recap of my day, then the Evie Ring allows me to do that. The “Today” page of the app is where I get to set my personalized goals and also view how I performed in achieving them.
For example, the app lets me set the number of steps I want to walk, the number of hours I aim to sleep, the number of calories I wish to burn, etc., and receive educational insights regarding different health metrics.
And not just that, if I decide to take the day off and simply focus on rest and recovery, the app will acknowledge my need and support this choice of mine as well.
This data can be seen via a cute illustration called “My Day” circle. The top of the circle shows me my active minutes, the calories I burned, and steps. The bottom of the circle shows me data about my recovery, which includes sleep and mindfulness. Furthermore, I also have the option to fill this circle any way I like. For example, I can log in to an activity session or my mood and menstrual symptoms in the circle.
Honestly, I absolutely love this holistic approach to health.
If I tap on “My body,” the app will show me what my activity levels look like. If I tap on “steps,” I will get to see the number of steps I walked. If I tap on “Active min,” I will get to see the total number of minutes I have been active today in comparison to yesterday. Similarly, the “Cal” tab will show me insights into the number of calories I burned.
The “My Body” section also shows me how my heart rate has been. The data appears in the form of a line graph. I can start a spot check on the app by tapping the “Do a spot check” option present there, logging in my period-related information, or just letting the app know when I am not feeling my best.
And not just this, the app, too, will notice patterns in my activity and make suggestions so that I can improve those bits. For example, if the app notices that I haven’t been sleeping well, it will basically tell me what I could do to have better sleep— without me having to ask.
The app will also analyze my stress levels using a combination of various physiological data like heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep quality, etc.
The “Journal” section of the app is the space where I can track my period and log in my my mood for the day and how my energy levels were.
All this information is collected over time and also presented to me in the form of trends so that I can analyze it and reach my health-related goals more efficiently. However, Evie has never revealed exactly how it does all this. But, according to Evie, it uses both machine learning and deep learning techniques to do its magic.
App Compatibility
As of now, the Evie app is only available for iPhone 8 or older, running on iOS 16 or later via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). So, my Evie Ring connects seamlessly with the Evie app on my iPhone, and not only is this connection super smooth, but it also prevents my Evie Ring battery from getting drained. However, my phone needs to be connected to a stable and secure internet connection for the app to work properly.

Wrap Up
Didn’t I say that it’s simply ingenious how my Evie Ring works? The ring, specifically designed for Women’s Health, tracks a variety of health metrics like heart rate, sleep patterns, and activity levels through its built-in sensors. Several other metrics, like ovulation period, can also be monitored; however, as of now, it’s not done on the basis of skin temperature variations; a user has to log them in manually.
All the collected data is analyzed and presented in the form of graphs and charts via an aesthetically pleasing app. The app not only lets me track my health-related trends but also sets activity goals and receives personalized recommendations on what I can do to achieve them.
Sure, since the ring is newly launched, there’s still so much that can be worked upon, but given whatever there is already, I absolutely love my Evie Ring and the companion app. With time, I am hopeful that Evie’s offerings are only going to get better. But what do you think about the Evie Ring? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
